My local produce people are SO DIM! My husband does the shopping and I have tried and tried to get some jicama. They don't know what he is talking about! I got him to try every pronunciation I could think of - 1/ Ji-cay-ma, 2/ Ji-kah-mah, and the actual proper pronunciation 3/ Hee-kah-mah. No comprendo.
How do you ask for it?
I guess we'll have to go to a whole other store miles from here.

Try "Mexican potato"

Have you written it down so they could see the word? Sometimes that helps them to understand it and then they can reference the paper when they go back to order their produce.

I always say hee-cum-a with the accent on the first syllable, but that's the pronunciation in Spanish since I'm on the Mexican border. That's also why I'm a fan of writing things down because pronunciation can vary so much from place to place.

:o ... Now why didn't I think of writing it down for them? (That's always assuming that they can read...) (Sorry)

huh. i'm confused as to why not having a broad knowledge of exotic fruits and vegetables means someone must be 'dim' or... illiterate? jicama isn't native to canada and i can't get it where i am on the east coast. did you know what a jicama was before you started eating raw foods?
(i hold myself back from commenting on things like this on this board kind of a lot but sometimes i just can't help myself.)

It's possible that you can't get it there. I never once saw it in NYC and I don't recall seeing it in MA or PA. Here on the West Coast of the USA, it is common. It is common in areas where there are a lot of Mexican people.

OOOOPS!!! :o That was EXTREMELY ill-spoken of me. Sorry, sorry, sorry. It shows I shouldn't let my frustrations show in such a way.

That's the way we say it in Utah and Idaho.....it's too fun to hear the different ways to say jicama.
