Should I be using these in crackers?
What do they taste like?
Why are they good for you?

Did you ever have a sesame seed bagel? They taste like that. ;) They have a nutty flavor and they have good fats in them, so when added to recipes they add creaminess. They are high in calcium. I love them, myself.

I keep a jar of them at work and at home. I just eat them straight from the jar when I need a little snack.

I also like grinding them in my coffee grinder and making a tahini type paste to put in my collard wraps and to dip my veggies in. I usually blend it with orange juice, ginger and garlic and sometimes add other things depending on what I want to do with it.

Erin I grew up just outside of Grand Rapids. I would think that Harvest Health might be your best bet to find the unhulled or sometimes called brown sesame seeds. Are you able to find a bunch of organics in GR? Last I visited it was a little challenging to get much of a variety. I bet you are ready for summer after the long winter I hear you had there.

Alright, I bought a whole bag of white sesame seeds. Did I waste my money? Should I always buy the unhulled (brown) seeds? If you buy the unhulled seeds, should you soak them first? I REALLY need to add sesame seeds to my diet for the calcium benefits.....which are the best for this? I also read in Ani Phyo's book that black sesame seeds are very high in calcium, but I could not find any.

Also, if I buy the brown (unhulled) seeds and soak them, can I dehydrate them like I would other seeds to grind in my coffee grinder?? Then again, not sure why I would grind them, oh, someone mentioned making their own tahini type butter, which I would love since it's getting harder to find RAW tahini!

Thanks.

I don't soak them, but I guess it couldn't hurt if you did.

The other thing I forgot to mention about why I like sesame seeds id that they are cheap! I get organic unhulled sesame seeds for $1.63/lb

The selection around here isn't that great, so I ordered some online, I got the unhulled kind, I also got some chia seeds... we have had a long winter, but the weather has been really nice lately, let's just see if it stays that way, I'm sure you remember Michigan weather!

I love sesame seeds and put them in lots of things, especially in my salads along with sunflower seeds. Ani Phyo has a great black sesame bread in her book.
