A survey...
How many of you gals that are eating all raw foods still wear conventional make up and nail polish?
I am so addicted to them, and have to change my nail polish alot to match my outfits, and the same with my make up. Just can't seem to want to give up my girly stuff...
Is there any nailpolish out there I wonder that isn't toxic? I know there are plenty of natural makeup choices, though, but no "Natural" nail polish choices!!
Maybe someday!

I know nothing about makeup or nail polish as I've never gotten into them. I did a google search for non toxic nail polish and found this: http://www.ulew.com/acquarella.php
There were other sites too, of course. I don't suggest this one, It's just an idea.
I know my local health food store has a ton of makeup.

Hey, thanks so much for the link. Yes, my HFS sells alot of makeup, too, but not the nail polish. The downside of loving makeup and such, I suppose. Just thought more people would be into makeup then their are. Of course, maybe it's because it's not important to them or to their career to wear it.

I haven't worn makeup or nail polish for a looong time. I used to wear alot of it though as I used to be a cosmetologist. I was big time into my nails - I had the really nice fake ones. My nails never got really nice and strong until I stopped using chemicals on them.
You might want to stop and think about how these chemicals get absorbed in your body. Your skin is an organ and it absorbs everything you put on it. Read the ingredients on your bottles and know that all those toxic things are circulating in your blood. Something to think about if you are doing raw and want your body to be clean and you want to be healthy and feel good. NOt to mention how bad the production of these things are for the enviroment.
When you are raw and you are clean, you should look better without makeup than with it. I don't know what career you are in - but I never knew makeup to be a requirement for a job. Even when I was a hair stylist - wearing makeup or nail polish, even though very much part of the field I was in, wasn't a requirement and no one said anything if I didn't wear it.
But until you break your addiction: There is a "less toxic" brand of nail products you can use.
http://www.nomiss.com/
You can buy their products online at Vegan Essentials too - Or some HFS have them - if you live near an Elephant Pharm. They have them too.
For makeup, switch to mineral makeup. There are several brands. Just do a search. I haven't used it before - but it is supposed to be mostly natural and defiantley less toxic than any makeup out on the market today.

I have used the nail polish from Honey Bee Gardens. It is water based.
http://www.honeybeegardens.com/
I was concerned at first about how long it would stay on, being water based. The answer is, it stays on a LONG time. The problem is you are not supposed to KEEP it on for a long time because the longer you keep it on, the harder it is to remove.
It doesn't chip like regular nail polish does. Rather, it just takes on a strange, dull sheen and the color begins to change a bit. In other words, it just looks nasty. I also found it super hard to remove. You have to use either alcohol or an expensive polish remover that they sell. You can't use an acetone or similar polish remover.
I found the polish remover to be very hard on my nails, drying out the nails and the skin and making my nails get thin and brittle. The colors were also a bit strange, not necessarily going on looking anything like they did in the bottle.
I have tried some of their other makeup products. They're okay. No better or worse than any others I've tried.

I keep looking but cant find any, you seem to be able to get eco make-up and nail polish or vegan, but not any that actually care for your body, you would of thought caring for animals, caring for the environment and caring for yourself all rolled into one:confused:
I know Lush in the uk are mainly vegan and TRY to stick to natural products but they still use some nasties, once my skin is better i think i will be able to go without foundation, but i doubt i'll ever be able to not wear eye make up:eek:

One of the byproducts of my becoming raw is that I no longer need to use nail polish or products (cover stick) on my face. I even think I look strange with mascara on now. I used to be so obsessive with painting my toenails and making sure I put my mascara on, but I just can't do it anymore. My toes are a rosy pink now. My boyfriend noticed them and said "hey, your toes are sexy baby", lol, they do look really pink and fresh. I think you're natural beauty begins to surface when you're raw and you no longer need to paint on a face or add paint to your body. It's a personal choice of course. But for me, I just like being au naturale these days.

Ani Phyo talks about nail polish in her book (makeup too) and she uses a nail buffer, which I went out and bought one to try. I also got one for each of my girls and they love them too.

I use Bare Minerals makeup. It feels better than regular makeup - like my skin can breathe. I don't leave home without mascara and tinted lip balm at the VERY least. :o I haven't worn nail polish in months but do use a nail buffer. I still like polished toes, but just haven't been able to make the time to get them done lately.

I still wear makeup (eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, lip gloss, bronzer once in a while) just for fun. That's the only reason I ever wore makeup, actually. I don't want to give it up. As for nail polish, I never do my own nails or toes anymore. I like the look of bare nails and I do too much with my hands. If someone were to take me to get a mani-pedi then sure, I'd go, but I wouldn't spend the money for it myself. On second thought, I may not even go for that, as the fumes are soo toxic.
Jenifae: Bare Minerals is the best foundation and the best of all the mineral makeups out there. I never was a foundation wearer but my mom has Bare Minerals and let my try it one day. Wow!! It was so easy to apply (fool-proof), felt as light as air, and looked so natural. If you're going to use a foundation, use that one!! I prefer not to cover my skin (don't feel I need it, thankfully), but if I did, I'd be a Bare Minerals girl :)

I use Alima cosmetics (try a search) and it rocks. No foreign substances in it :)
No longer paint my nails, though. The chemicals are just too strong. Gave up dying my hair, too, untill I can find a non-toxic brand...but I kind of like my natural hair now. Still, it's nice to have fun and play with your appearance and colors.

Hey Francesca,
I love the Bare Minerals. It's also helping to calm my rosacea. It's amazing.
Hey RawDancer,
I too no polish my nails...too many toxins. I also quit coloring my hair and am being okay with my brownish red hair. I used to make it more red. ;) Thank goodness I don't have gray.

Swiss formulated, made in America, all natural botanical Arbonne is for me. Skin care is what this company is all about. They do offer a make-up line but since I use so little of it, I just stick with the basic mascara and eyeliner. I use locally made comfrey salve on my lips which promotes healing for chapped ones.

I used to do the whole shebang when it came to makeup, but then realized what a crutch it was for me. I think makeup can be fun and artsy once in awhile, (I can do a killer art-job on the eyes) but if I wear it on a daily basis, I start to feel really self-conscious, always thinking "god forbid anyone should see my blotchy skin and tiny eyes!" So now my face is completely naked. I have zits and uneven skintone, but guess what? It's my skin. It's part of me. And I'm doing myself a disservice by covering myself up. It's hard to live this way though because I'm a cosmetician at a drugstore and my customers and supervisor wonder why I don't wear makeup. I dunno, it just looks weird on me now. Even on other people it looks weird.

I've had such a bad experience with Arbonne. I actually heard there was a scam going on there. Like, how Arbonne the actual company doesn't test on animals but these independent unbiased laboratories that they use for testing do test on animals, and since they aren't part of the company, Arbonne doesnt have to claim animal cruelty. Actually, a lot of companies are a part of that scam.
AND my skin was fully recovered from acne, but since I started using Arbonne my chin has been completely broken out ever since. It's been months since going off it and I'm still fighting the rash. My skin isn't very sensitive either. I don't know what they put in their products, but my skin has been going through hell for the past few months.
And Arbonne isn't all natural. They don't even claim to be. Ask a consultant and they'll tell you that straight up. They use the "best of science and nature".

This book is for the ladies who still wear makeup. I just finished reading an interesting book. the title was: "Not just a pretty face: the ugly side of the beauty industry". I was pretty disgusted. I always knew that makeup, nail polish, gel, sprays and so on had some toxic stuff but never at this level. It is just appauling. Maybe you should read and find out for yourselves like I did. So I decided to put everything to rest.!!!!garbage!!!!!

there is a company called :Outside In Cosmetics: a small home based business - she formulates it all herself. I have met her and liked what she said - so tried some I really like it. No preservatives / additives. She sells from her web-site http://www.outsideincosmetics.com/

I have to agree that I don't think Arbonne is a "natural" choice. I was a consultant for awhile (a friend convinced me I would make thousands of dollars per month with it- silly me lol...oh well I was 24 what did I know) and got out of it after a few months because not only did it irritate and break my skin out even more, but researching some of the ingredients led me to believe that these products were not as safe and natural as most are led to believe. Their big thing they promote is that they don't use mineral oil, however, they do use some other highly questionable ingredients. It was hard to put my name on the line for them.
When I did wear make-up every day, I used Larenim mineral make-up, although eventually I realized that I actually look better without it. I hate looking like I'm wearing a film over my skin. I have redness, some pimples, and scars, but make-up doesn't really make my face look better, just different. I do like dramatic eyes, so I wear Larenim eyeshadow with some Gabriel eyeliner most days. For lipstick, which I haven't gone without since I was 9, I use the MyChelle Lip tints, which have sadly been discontinued but I have a stick that has lasted me a long time. I hear that they are coming out with a concealer that I will definitely buy because it's nice to have something to put on dark circles and red zits, but at the moment I'm happy letting my face breathe.
NOw what I would really like to find right now is a type of retin-a that doesn't contain the horrible fillers/chemicals that prescription retinoids have...
