I'm so distraught, I don't know if I can even post this. I will try to muster up the courage to not faint as I tell you what happened at my house the other day.
(DEEP BREATH)
I was watching a boy in the neighborhood. His mom was running late and asked if he could eat dinner with us. I had some (sad) frozen pizza for just this kind of emergency, so I made it and served it with salad. He asked for RANCH dressing, which of course, I did not have. I offered honey mustard-but he counter-offered with SUGAR. Yes, SUGAR. HE WANTED SUGAR ON HIS SALAD. My children started encouraging this, knowing that I was now in a weakened state and trying my best not to faint right there in the kitchen.
Now, I don't usu. have sugar on hand but I had some leftover from a recipe we had to make for an event.
My heart was heavy as I sprinkled a small, nearly invisible amt on his wonderful greens. He asked for more-a lot more. I just said "Sorry kid. No can do. This hurts me bad enough as it is."
I can't believe I did that! It's been a few days and I am still reeling from it!

Hey! Life goes on. Just don't admit to having any more sugar anymore for anyone. Or better yet - ditch it...
Don't lose sleep over it. Since then he's probably had about a pound more of it. Not from you, but from his daily diet. Sad, but that's how it is. Concentrate on your kids and you...

I like your response to the kid! Cute!
Hey, when I was a kid, one of my favorite things to eat was a sugar sandwich! It is bread (preferablely Wonder Bread of course), butter and white sugar on top.
And even most sad is that it is my mom's recipe! She used to make them for us.
You are a good mom! ;)
Aleesah - Yeah, putting salt on melons was a popular in my family too. I actually do like the taste of salt on my cantolope!

You're saying this tongue-in-cheek, right?

I'd have said "sure, he'll eat what we eat.". This is an "emergency"?
I am REALLY confused.

agreed, he's probably had a pound of sugar since then. the kids (9-12 year olds) i work with come to school with dunkin donuts and beg me for coffee and milk - we go to the co-op and they buy (organic) chocolate and soda. the teenagers i work with bring buckets of coke from fast food restaurants and wendys to our afterschool program. you can only do so much for other people's kids... we lecture them about the human rights issues with fast food and coca cola and offer healthy snacks, beyond that what they put into their bodies is ultimately their decision.
a little sea salt on watermelon IS really good though, just for the record. also balsamic vinegar on watermelon. yum.

yes-this post was meant to be tongue-in-cheek. But I have never heard of sugar on salad. I was caught completely off guard.

Good job you don't go to McDon's then, coz they're not averse to adding it to their salads. 'Healthy Option', anybody?! ;)
On a serious note, I bet that child's teeth are suffering from his mother's attitude towards nutrition, aren't they..?
It is sad, but then resisting reality only leads to tension in oneself and that serves the good of nobody, least of all ourselves. It's a weird and wonderful wide world we live in :)

People will do anything to get their kids to eat vegetables including poisoning them. *shrugs* what to do?

In case the little fella comes knockin at your door again, maybe honey or agarve might be a better subsitute. He can still leave for home (sugar)high.

There is quite a lot of sugar in over processed, chemically laden, bottled salad dressings. He probably got used to the taste and knew what to ask for unfortunately as a substitute.
As an uplifting note, I was visiting my family yesterday and my 1 1/2 year old nephew just loved the juicy red apple I sliced for us to eat. He was singing and humming and coming back for more. I hope as he gets older he will reach for these kinds of sweets automatically, despite the peer temptations.

Surely you sprinkle was no more than what would have been found in SAD honey mustard or even Catalina dressing/ Those dressings have always tasted like syrup to me. Even bottle barbque sauce is too sweet.
