I made a green smoothie with just apples and kale. I can't drink it because it tastes too spicy. Not spicy hot spicy (which I like) but spicy I-want-to-gag spicy. What could I add to mask the taste?
I don't want to pour it down the drain!

More fruit, I think. Maybe some ice to thin it out, too?

Thanks kissum, but I just tossed it. I don't want to waste any more ingredients in a smoothie that just may not come out ever tasting good.

Kale is really bitter in my experience- I can never handle it in more than tiny amounts raw.

I just added a two bananas to mine to tone down the overwhelming kick from the parsley...I put an entire bunch of parsley in (the curly kind) and it seems to be the dominating flavor..the bananas helped me out a lot. In fact, I need to go to the grocery and buy some more bananas..thank God the organic ones are inexpensive..my budget is pretty pitiful at the moment...that's why I just juiced up the veggies that I had and am making green smoothies I guess until I run out.........

So I ended up not throwing my smoothie away! I saw the big glass of it sitting in the sink, and decided . . . . hmmmmm . . . . what if I squeeze the juice out?
So, I got some cheese cloth and a colander, squeezed the juice out of the smoothie, and saved the pulp to make crackers.
The juice was sweet and kale flavored and delicious.
I love kale, btw. I don't know why the kale that I got in this particular smoothie tasted gross. But once it was juiced, it was fine.
The pulp smells a bit off, though. Maybe the fiber in this kale tasted weird? I don't know.
I've never tried curly leaf kale before today's smoothie fiasco. I'd only had the flat leaf kind. I think I definitely prefer the flat leaf kind of kale!

Next time, try it with a big chunk of pineapple and blend.

Rawstrength, I had the same thing happen when I recently used a different type of kale - it was brighter green and not as curly as my usual kale. It was very spicy - I just drank it anyway, but barely. I haven't had the desire to add anymore of it to my GSes.

I find kale to be really strong but do use it a lot but add more fruit. Always a banana, maybe pineapple or berries to sweeten it up. You were very creative in how to use it afterall, great idea!

I think it helps to cut out the stems. When I stopped adding the kale stems to my smoothies, they tasted better. I chop up the stems and add them to salads, where I don't mind the stronger taste.

I use kale with spinach and lots of bananas. I have never had a problem.

I have this smoothie everyday:
4 apples
4 leaves kale
1/2 lemon (peeled, but include some white pith)
2 cups water
it is DELICIOUS and the lemon removes bitterness of kale......I LOVE it and highly reccommend it. got it from victoria boutenko's latest book.
i know your other smoothie is tossed but don't give up on the apple kale GS...they are soooooooooooo healthful and YUMMy this way
