Hello there folks! I'm new to the forum as you can see and I wanted to introduce myself. I'm 18, and a college freshman. I've always been very thin weighing about 108 for the past couple years at 5'5". I could eat whatever I wanted and not gain a pound. I came to college last August and continued my eating habits (although admittedly they got a bit worse, cookies, pizza and cheeseburgers everyday) and my metabolism slowed way down. This happened like right around my 18th birthday, and I gained 20lbs in the matter of 2 months, going from a size 1 to a size 5. Apparently, this happened to my mother too, who also used to be very thin as a teen. I am predesposed to cellulite as well (thanks again, mom, lol), and have had it under the surface even when I was 12 at 98 lbs, but it then become visible on the backs of my thighs, somewhat on my stomach and more easily visible everywhere. I hate it.

Anyways, I decided to stop eating that way back in November, started having mostly fruits with an occasional slice of poppyseed or pumpkin bread for breakfast, a salad for lunch, the main dish (which is like home cooked, never pizza or cheeseburgers, etc) for dinner. It's been 5 months since then, I've lost probably like 4 or 5 lbs, which is good, but not as much as I expected. I've been thinking a lot recently about becoming a vegatarian, and have decided instead to either go vegan or raw, but I really don't know much about the raw diet, I've been reading a lot here and liking what I see. I was wondering though, if beans can't be boiled, how are they eaten? I love beans, lol, that would suck to give them up.

Also, I decided to kick off this endeavour with a fast (drinking only water and tea), hopefully a week-long one at that. It's day two, and I feel like I haven't slept in a week, my head hurts and my eyes burn. Also, my lymph nodes in my neck hurt, but I almost think that's a good thing. Ever since jr. high I have had reoccuring problems with my throat, ranging from strep to mono to staph infections or combinations of them over and over again. I currently don't have a sore throat, but maybe those glands are full of toxins and thats why I keep getting sick. I don't know. Anyways, it's nice to meet you all, and I look forward to future discussions!

Welcome! May I suggest you borrow a copy or get your own of Alissa's book and DVD? EVERYTHING you need to know to get you started in discussed in there.
Beans are very hard to digest. Certain ones can be sprouted however.
Also, use the search features (the banana up top or the search button) and read, read, read...!

Aloha and Welcome to RFT!!! Great intro (to you AND your mom - LOL ;) !)

Raw is an amazing LIFEstyle and the food totally RAWks!! It's so delicious!

VeganforLife has given you some sound advice... if you can get ahold of Alissa's book... you will be so amazed at how simple and fun Living on Live foods can be.

sorry - I can't help you with the beans question ... I've never sprouted beans... but maybe you could post that question over in the sprouting section... hmmm... I thought I saw a sprouting section... ...

anywayz... so many things can be sprouted like nuts seeds and grains, and made into some AMAZING foods... like raw pizza... spicy tacos, enchiladas, there is also a recipe on this site for refried beans - but it's made with nuts instead... I haven't tried it - but the pictures looked great!

as far as you fast... what kind of tea are you drinking? If it's green tea - the caffine might be giving you a headache. But if it's a healthy herb tea -- and you are also drinking a lot of water... you could be going thru detox. And... since your throat has been an area of trouble for you ... it is very possible that you are detoxing there first!...

blessings on your journey - and it's great to have you here!

RAWk on!
