View Full Version : Are you suppose to soak dried olives?

I finally bought some raw dried olives. They taste really good but very salty. I was wondering if maybe I was suppose to soak them first. That way maybe some of the saltiness will rinse away?

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Some people will choose to soak them if they are a bit salty for their liking (and possibly to soften certain types of dried olives if they are rather hard, depending on usage). However, if your plan is to include them in a particular recipe, you can omit any extra salt and just rely on the saltiness of the olives. They can be great as is for perking up dishes. Also, if you do soak the olives, the leftover water can be used as a flavorful ingredient for other ideas. Several different things to try :)

I soak mine and I do like them better that way. It doesn't take the entire saltiness away but a little. But it makes them somewhat more like cooked, canned olives after they've been soaked.
