Okay. I put some Banana Bread batter in the dehydrator last night and when I flipped it this morning I smelled it and.....EEWWW! :p  So I thought I'd taste it just to make sure it wasn't any good and.....Yep! It tasted just as gross. What is the secret of making bread and other foods that use sprouted wheat berries, buckwheat, etc? Do you crank the dehydrator up to 140 for an hour or something? If this is the case, when do you do this? Help!!

Thanks in advance!

I read somewhere that you should set the D at 155 for the first hour of uncooking, then turn it down to 110 or so. It takes quite a while for the food temp to increase the high initial temp won't kill your food. :) So sorry your banana bread tanked...better luck next time!

I made it recently to and same thing... major YUK!!! Does increasing the temp for the first hour change the flavour??? I just assumed I didn't like the sprouted wheat berries.

Increasing the temp for the first hour won't change the flavor, it will just dehydrate whatever you're making faster so you won't have to dehydrate as long and the ingredients won't go rancid...supposedly it works.

ANYTHING ive made with sprouted wheat berries has gone in the trash. i made the wheat berry salad, and the pop tarts, and the wheat crackers, all out of alissas book, and all on different occasions, and ALL ended up YUCK IN THE TRASH. i didnt have a problem with the wheat fermenting, just that it was YUCK to me; really dry, starchy, chalky. yuck. so i think i dont like wheatberries. ...

Well, if it is the wheatberries that taste terrible then I'm sorry but all you folks out there that like them are a little weird!

http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s43/FireStar_830/laugh.gif... ahahhaha!!! i haven't made anything out of the wheatberries yet... but I love corn tortillas, and the onion bread recipe thats been floating around here on RFT forever... and pizza crust out of the sprouted buckwheat groats was FANTASTIC!!

I haven't cranked up my dehydrator to 140 ... but I have cranked it to 120..125... then turn it down to about 114 to 109.... depending on the weather. If there is a lot of moisture or humidity in the air - I use a higher tempertature... learned that the hard way!! ;)

now - I'm not sure if i want to try the wheatberries!!

I don't know man, I just haven't had good experiences with buckwheat or wheatberries. StarFire: did you crank your dehydrator to 120-125 for an hour then back down? Give me the scoop! Please :o

This is how I feel about almond pulp....maybe I'm doing something wrong but everything I've made and popped in the dehydrator has ended up in the garbage :(

I hate to waste food...I've never done anything with wheatberries but grow wheatgrass and I've made a mental note to avoid recipes calling for them too....thanks....

I don't want to disuade people from ever attempting recipes that use wheatberries. You just have to turn up your dehydrator for an hour or so (not sure exactly how high-folks are not in agreement here).
