I am trying for the first time to sprout chick peas it has been 3 days and most of them have sprouted. This may seam like a silly question but how long do I wait and what percentage of the peas need to sprout before use.

any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I sprout them until the little sprout is about as long as the pea is wide. You can stop whenever you wish. You just want them to be tender enough to eat. I often make raw hummus with them. Good Luck!

I just do them to taste. When they lose the chalky taste, they are ready to eat.

But are all of them supposed to sprout, this is the problem that I am having the majority of them have sprouted. So do I not use the peas that have not sprouted?

Yes you may taste a bean that has not gotten its tail, but I find it easier to just wait a day or so when more tails show by putting my beans in some sunlight at the end of the process. I'm not a big garb fan sprouted, but love then the "old" way before raw days.

OK I just tried sprouting chick peas and making hummus with them. The tails were around the size of the chick pea..

But: OMG it smells so GROSS!! Maybe I just think that freshly-sprouted chick peas are just plain gross? I definitely will not be eating them--in fact, I put them outside for the squirrels..

Is there a seceret to these to make them taste not gross? I did rinse the water out several times a day..

How did you sprout your chickpeas? Did you use a jar and cloth or a colander/sprouting bag? Usually the best method for large beans and peas would be something like a colander or sprouting bag so they can get the most air circulation. When I sprout chickpeas, I use a nut milk (i.e. paint strainer) bag. They smell and taste pretty fresh when you give them enough air to breathe.

Hope this helps a bit...

p.s. - here's some raw sprouted hummus I made a few weeks ago...yummers!

I used a jar with cheesecloth.. Hmmmmmmm maybe a collandar is better? And less sprouting time than a few days--more like 12 hours. as someone suggested?

i've sprouted chickpeas twice. the first time i let them sit too long in water/moisture and they smelled awful (they had spoiled) the second time was successful- i soaked them 12 hours, then hung them in a nut bag above the sink for 2 days. They were much happier and had no funky smell. I would rinse them twice a day.

Sprout chickpeas for 2 - 3 days at most. At least 80% should be sprouting.

I just bought some chick peas for sprouting today. I will make detailed notes of the procedure and report the results. (w/ photos from cell phone camera)
