It's April 1st!!!!!

Let's Get Moving

Question of the week:

What is your favorite exercise? (the one that you don't have to be dragged kicking and screaming to the gym to complete)

Think about your favorite exercise and think of ways to tweak it; make it more challenging if it's the only thing you have time to do right now. If you are like me, you get bored after a while. I like hearing about what everyone is doing. It keep me motivated. Let's keep each other accountable. You never know when our "sunny" buddies might pop in on us to make sure we are moving and grooving:D . This thread is about having fun and working hard - yes they do go together. I guess this is our April thread for the month. Let's get it on!

What is my favorite exercise -
(at the moment) cardio kickboxing..there's something about the alternating leg movements and punches that I really like.

Ok,I'm in.
And I'm going to turn over a new leaf(pun intended:) ),and check in regularly
in April.

My favourite current exercise is Turbo Jam,but even I tire of doing the same
5 dvds in rotation sometimes, over and over so...
My current fav is going to the new yoga studio which is fortuitiously/serendipitiously(sp?),less than a ten minute walk from my house-
and I get a 'green' discount, for being eco-conscious,by hoofing it there on foot.
Helps get me in shape, and helps calm my mind, body, and spirit.

My April goals are as follows:
Cardio Kickboxing:Turbo Jam minimum 4x a week,
Strength Training,4x a week(upper twice,lower twice)
Attend yoga class 3x a week

I know what you mean about the alternating leg movements and punches.
Makes me feel like a powerful warrior or something.LOL
Plus it's a great way to take out life's daily frustrations and stress!;)

Hip Hip Hooray for Tepiglet......

I wanted to buy the turbo jam but then decided against it... I'm trying to make myself accountable for these other two exercise dvd's collecting dust...

doing some strength training (abs/back/legs/thighs) & a little cardio kickboxing

I know what you mean,lavendarj.
Several years ago, after seeing the Slim in 6 infomercial for the umpteenth time,I decided to order the whole dvd set, plus extras, and they've been gathering dust ever since.:)
I tried to do the first dvd in the series several times, but was just so bored and unchallenged
with the routine, that I never went back to them.
Point being,that if a workout out isn't fun,challenging and enjoyable,it's
hard to be motivated to exercise.
I should probably sell the remaining unopened dvds on e-bay,and use the money for yoga lessons or something.;)

April goals:
Cardio kickboxing(Turbo Jam)minimum 4x a week
Strength training 4x a week
Attend yoga class 3x a week

Lavendarj / Morn you are everywhere and I am as well. I just post my exercise for tonight at the other place.. can't name it here.. Anyways I'll try to join here as well.

I did 45 mins of dance Revolution tonight, not sure if that was a good workout but I did a lot of jumping. I also did 10 mins of rebounding and 5 mins of weight lifting.

I'll see how I can update the siggy but I know there is some rule not to over do it so I might not be able to fit it.

Lavendar -That's wonderful your Dad is out of the hospital.

Last night before bed I did cardio for an hour. I dont know how accurate those machines are. I used the wave machine for an hour at level 25. Which seems crazy but I needed to really push myself so I can get some sleep. I did 30 minutes of interval weight training (deadlifts, squats, lunges, pikes, situps). I felt like Rocky Balboa.

It worked. I exhausted myself and I dont even remember my head hitting the pillow!

I have got to do that again tonight. It is so worth it.

The wave machine is like a new age stepper with very smooth movement. It is a cross between stepping and jogging for me at a fast pace. They are used for Olympic training. I never have any sore knees or back pain after using it. I just feel exhausted, yet refreshed. The one at the gym has a tv and I lose track of time flipping through the channels.

Hey I'm knew here but I thought I'd join in on this....
My favorite exercise is..... hmm I don't really have one.... I am very active, I surf, skateboard, run the beach, swim, mountain bike.... however, I am short and kinda like stocky or compact as my mother says.... so my goal is to lengthen my body and I plan on doing this by running farther (apparently your muscles start to lengthen if you run greater distances) and getting back into yoga... oh and also start mountain biking again, I have not done it in a while as my bike was out of commission but I just got it back today... yay... oh yeah and I need to start doing daily core body work.... I'm not into tapes or machines, a medicine ball is nice and I have some free weights.... I just need to get moving!
Sounds like you all are doing awesome!
Keep up the great work!

Welcome LizH2O-

You are active. Wow, that's great. I've heard and read the same thing about running. I working very slowly to build myself up to running. I started out on the treadmill. I don't like running outside because of the concrete payment. I also like the medicine ball core and overall body strength.

I'm off to the gym in a little bit.

i'm joining... a little late but better than never.

went to my first pilates class ever tonight... ouch. so an hour of pilates and a mile on the elliptical; 1/2 before the class, 1/2 after.

my tentative plan is:
monday: 1 hour pilates and 15 minutes of cardio
tuesday: treadmill on an incline for 1-1.5 hours
wednesday: 1 hour pilates and 15 minutes of cardio
thursday: 1 hour of yoga at home
friday: 1 hour of cardio... cycling, elliptical, jogging, biking, etc.
saturday: 1 hour pilates and 15 minutes of cardio OR 1 hour of cardio
sunday: 1 hour of yoga at home

my goal is to accomplish these goals at least 5 days each week. would be nice to have an hour each day but if all i get to is stretching and biking around the city a couple days a week i'll still be happy. :) my ULTIMATE goal is to be fit enough by the end of the month to feel comfortable joining the boxing class at our y which involves SERIOUS SERIOUS conditioning, lots of really buff men and few women. eyes on the prize.

This looked like an interesting discussion!

My favorite excercise at the moment is BELLY DANCING!!! 24 hour fitness holds a class every wednesday night. it's only an hour long but LET ME TELL YA!! I get stiches on my sides every time because you have to constantly hold your stomach in while moving all sorts of ways. It's also made me aware of my posture, and so I'm always sitting up straight at work (sucking in my "gut" of course!).
If your gym doesn't have the class, you may want to buy a video of it. Don't forget the ornamental "gypsy wrap" either...that's what makes it fun!
The first time I took the class I felt so silly, but all the other girls in their had their little bells on their skirts and it was great. Once you get the hang of it you start incorporating it into your regular dance moves. ;)
Try the "shimmey" sometime!!

I just started an intro Bellydancing class too!
It's fun isn't it?
But you're right,it does take some getting used to.
I'm not that coordinated, and it's difficult to isolate and contract certain muscles-but I've only had one class so far,so it'll get easier,I'm sure.
We haven't gotten to 'shimmey' yet, since we're still working on beginners' technique, but that sure sounds like fun!

I'd like to join in. I was exercising religiously for weeks until I fell off the horse this past Tuesday.

My question is: What is the best exercise regiman for optimum weight loss?

Is there such a thing as too much exercise? I was running and using the elliptical, buring 1000 cals a session, but I then hurt my knee and I find machines pretty boring. What can I do in between runs, besides yoga?

I'm going to try and go for a run tomorrow...hope my knee is okay.

Morn
04-10-2008, 09:23 PM
Moth I hope your knee is ok too! And yes I do think that there is such a thing is too much exercise. I have heard that it is more effective to give your body some time to rest, and repair itself. That is almost as important as regular exercise itself.

Having lost 100 pounds myself my opinion is that cardio is the best exercise to help you lose weight. I know a lot will disagree cause a lot of people are into weight lifting, however, if your goal is to strictly lose weight cardio is the way to go. (running, aerobic exercise, etc.). Now when you do weightlifting it will add muscle and muscle weighs more than fat and the more muscle mass you have the more calories you can consume and burn cause it takes more calories to feed and maintain muscle than it does fat. Several years ago being overweight I did a lot of weight training and I lost inches but I bulked up and couldn't get down in my weight. I didn't like my body shape then as I seemed to never be able to get lean. I kinda looked like an overweight he woman. However, I was pretty strong. This time around I did raw food along with 95% cardio and 5% weights and I am much leaner and like the way I look. Now I would like to add in more weight training to firm and tone up some areas but I figured I would wait til I got to my goal to get serious about that. I guess it will really depends upon what you desire for yourself and how you want your body shape to be.

Ok I just had to share this with you all here too! Today is day 16 of my fast and I am feeling pretty good. Had to work earlier today and then stopped at the gym on the way home. I was so psyched and proud of myself as I did a test for the first time to see if I could run an hour on the tread mill. I am happy to report that I ran 5.15 miles in 65 minutes (with a five minute warm up and a 5 minute cool down in the end). The treadmill would only let me set it for a maximum of 1 hour and it automatically gives you a 5 minute cool down in the end. So I am so happy that I could do it. I really had to mentally and physically push myself but I did it! I guess I am just excited because I really didn’t know what I could do but since I normally do a ˝ hour on the stairmaster and ˝ hour of running I figured if I cut out the stairmaster I could just run the whole hour instead. I was right!

Today’s exercise: 1 hour 15 minutes

65 minutes on treadmill – 55 running – 10 warm up and cool down
5 minutes of stretching
5 minutes of abs

Hey Hey Hey Peeps...

Today was a great day for working out despite the flooding rains.

Morn-
You are really doing it...I'm so proud of ya! You keep us inspired.

To you Bellydancers-
Keep me informed of how your classes are going. The bellydancing video I did was only 15 minutes. I can only imagine what a workout 1 hour must be

MOTH-
That's a tough question. I'm going with Morn on this one. You do have to know what's best for your body. Personally, I need to mix up with intervals every now and then. I think that when I start gettting bored with a routine it's my body's way of telling me that it's gotten used to it...but if I do intervals (like on the ellipticals but increasing intensity/speed every two minutes) it keeps me focused and it challenges me. That's a good question to keep thinking about...

Today is day 17 of my fast and I am feeling great. I also dropped another pound and I am down to 132. I worked out early in the day and did a yoga class. I thought that would be a good option as it would not be so strenuous on me while I am fasting. It was a great class and by the end I was pretty relaxed. I can see how yoga could totally help improve my flexibility. I however, could do with all the talking aspect of it. Todays exercise: 1 hour and 10 minutes

10 minutes on the stairmaster
60 minutes of fitness yoga

Happy Saturday!

beckx, docsharp, fitme, Irish Penguin, lifeAgift, LizH2O, Maui Girl, morn, MOTH, NOGMO, portiz, and tepiglet and anyone else....

As we wrap up this week and tomorrow begins a new week. the "end of the week" question is.....

How have you celebrated you this month?

I was just thinking that all too often, we make time to beat up on ourselves, doubt our abilities, and minimize our successes. What have you done for you lately? Whether you were blessed to be able to take a whole day, a few hours, a few minutes..how did you celebrate you. We have to remember to celebrate ourselves. Loving and nurturing ourselves is key to maintaining success in our fitness and health goals. A lot of us have been raised in ways that make us believe that we haven't done anything unless we are stressed or physically drained at the end of the day/week-we actually feel selfish if we buy something for ourselves. We forget the importance of being "self-full" which doesn't imply being full of ourselves but recognizing the importance of replinishing ourselves. Who else knows your body's mental/physical/emotional/spiritual needs better than you. So having said all that, I'll repeat the question...

How have you celebrated you this month?

I'll go first.....

I had a "me" celebration on Thursday when I made it home from my practicum and other obligations by deciding not to do anything (though my conscious was trying to pressure me into working on a project or doing research,etc.). I took the evening off and enjoyed some tea and even a little televison. It was all about me for the night and I enjoyed myself. My celebration came in the decision to do nothing except enjoy me. The fact that this is April 12th and I just had one celebration let's me know I need to re-evaluate my schedule of priorities. We are almost at the half-way point in the month; it's time to take note of what is working and what's not working in our lives so we don't take it into May with us...

FYI (just some links I thought you might like)

(I wanted to spread some inspiration. This guy's name is Kevin Gianni - hope I spelled his name right- you can find different exercise threads with him, but this is just a simple 3/4 minute video where he is talking about doing what you love..I think it's inspirational; I think the video is about 4 min)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWgseYLoRa4&feature=related
(more of Kevin Gianni using a foam roller to show how to improve your posture - for those of us who work or spend a lot of time at a desk on a computer hunched over; the video is a little over 4 minutes I think)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcXW67jIEA4&feature=related
(here he is talking about protein sources for raw vegans, well he does include vegetarians, if anyone looks at this tell me what you think of his views on the protein that he says we need....the whole protein issue/debate for raw vegans is an area that I need to expand my knowledge in - the video is about 5 minutes long)

I wanted to add one more Kevin Gianni video... He provides exercise that we can do at home...this one is all about that dreaded arm flab -as he calls it. The "push-ups with a twist" will take me a little bit to get them right but I think the rest of it is doable- I've done the tricep dips and the bear walks before)

I think the dolphin one will be fun to try. In my health club they do alot of the other ones when I do aerobic classes.

Since I am fasting (I am freezing most of the time) so for me I am taking out the time for me and doing lots of bubble baths before I go to bed at night. I think I had 3 this past week. It warms me up and gives me a chance to relax and unwind after a long day at work.

well...it's such a GORGEOUS day outside...
for cardio...did about 20 minutes of playing "tag" with zeus and cleo (mainly cleo).
then for toning...played 10 minutes tug-o-war with both zeus and cleo (zeus dominates in this one)
then more cardio...mowed the front and back lawns...probably about 45 minutes worth (including starting up the darn lawnmower-that took about 5 minutes alone).
then did about 10 minutes stretching in the back deck after I finished with all that.
and drank tons of water so far...

morn-
bubblebaths sound so relaxing (especially since the temperatures dropped back down to the 30's/40's from the 70's earlier in the week

portiz-
sounds like you had a fun day of working out without hardly trying..that's the best kind..zeus and cleo must be pretty strong to do tug-of-war

Well, I haven't got to my exercises yet..but I'm on it...

Hey guys! Today I ran for over 40 minutes (my body is sore because I haven't ran in about a week! and my knee is killing me) and did some weightlifting with the machines, plus about 120 situps. And since I still feel like I have energy, I'm going to do some yoga, push ups and lunges after my shower.

I wonder what I should do tomorrow. I don't think I should run because of my knee...I wonder if the bike would be okay.

I sometimes get confused as to how to break up my running days, particularly because my knee is still bugging me.

I'm thinking you should do something that allows your knee to heal or rest or whatever it needs. Biking might not be the best option either since there is the constant motion and movement. I don't know...you might have to settle for a simple walk until your knee gets better.

It was nice weather today, so I went on a hike through the forest and up a huge, rocky hill.

Then later i did 65 minutes on the elliptical
And twenty minutes of vinyasa yoga

After my shower I'll do some situps/pushups and call it a day.

I like this thread! Keeps me motivated to MOVE.

By the looks of it, your knee is doing better - Yay!!!

Sorry for the late night check in. It's 1:31 a.m. at the time of this post in my neck of the world and I am literally just getting in. Even though it's Tuesday I must say that I could tell that chances were I wasn't making it to the gym on Monday so while I was busy working and stuff I stepped away a couple of times throughout the day and did some running up and down stairs. I just ran from the 3rd floor to the basement and back up again a few good tiimes and that little workout reminded me just how much more I've got to do in terms of gaining strength.

See ya....

Late night check in..well it is Wednesday-technically. Anyway...

I didn't go to the gym because I'm still sitting in front of this computer at the library at 12:12 a.m. trying to finish a project. Instead I made up a routine

4 cycles of running up 4 flights of stairs
-at the top 25 jumping jacks/25 calf raises
-at the bottom 10 forward squats/standing squats, upper cut punches, tae bo kicks

repeat everything for 4 sets

Gotta go the library is closing in 45 minutes and I'm soooooo sleepy

I ran over three miles today outside!

But I got bad knee pain afterwards. :( I'm such a bad judge of knowing when I should stop. It didn't seem to hurt much during the run.

Oh well. It's back to the elliptical and yoga for tomorrow.

What's up everybody......

I worked out outside today because it jumped up into the '70's...

Since I'm cleansing and fasting it is starting to get challenging. We briskly walked outside for a while and mixed in some running and jogging. Then afterwards we did some drills of jumping jacks, sprints, kick boxing moves, and walking lunges...

We had an earthquake this morning at 4:38 a.m. This is history in our area as it just doesn't happen. It was a 5.4. I thought the ceiling fan was going to crash to the floor by the way it was shaking and spinning.

Well, anyway.......

Yep, it's Friday and we don't have much of April left..so let's take stock of what we've done, what we still want to do and then let's do it....

Rethinking my beginning focus for this month? I still need to do two new things for this month. My sister and I missed the trail walk (my dad was sick) I've still got time..so I better get busy...

Hey Lavender what did you decide to do for a fast? Are you doing the MC drink or your own thing?

Morn
04-18-2008, 09:19 PM
Today is day 24 of my fast and I am still at 131. I worked out at the gym earlier today and then went shopping and went to the Levi’s store and bought my first pair of Levi’s in a size 2. I couldn’t believe I squeezed myself into a size 2. I am pretty estatic (even if it is only temporary!) After that I went to the fruit market and got more produce for next week as I was getting low on a few things. I also just got home from Victoria Secret and bought a really awesome workout outfit that looks incredible on me. I can't wait to actually wear it to the gym. I usually wear mismatched outfits and big t-shirts (nothing really nice) so this will be a switch. I will actually be styling. Wish I could buy more but it was really darn expensive. So I will wait til the semi annual sale when some of it will go on clearance.

Today’s exercise: 1 ˝ hours

30 minutes of running on the treadmill – over 2 miles
1 hour of fitness yoga

Hey Lavender what did you decide to do for a fast? Are you doing the MC drink or your own thing?

It's so funny Morn--my cleanse is constantly changing. I drank up all my smoothies..I still have some tea left. Needless to say, I need to go to grocery store but can't put it in my budget this weekend..so whether I like it or not, I'll probably be doing teas and water for the next couple of days..

I can tell a BIG difference without the smoothies. I have a dull headache type of feeling but it's my body trying to convince me to eat something.. I just walked in the door. My sister and I were at the gym from 9 - 11 p.m. and I tell you what, I must have been working off of pure adrenaline. We did a combo of walking and jogging on the track and then did a bunch of other some drills similiar to the ones that I did the other day except we threw the jump rope into the mix along with some ab work. We ended with some ping pong. We had a good time and the kids desperately needed to get some exercise....I think they are getting way to lethargic.

Look at you in the size 2's... You are doing it......

Another late night check in. I just walked in the door...

Saturday report:
Spent about 1 1/2 hours in the gym:
-jog/walk for a mile on the track
-20 min high intensity intervals on the spinning bike
-20 min intervals on the elliptical
-20 min strength traiing: med ball workout & thigh machines

(ran out of time and energy for ping pong)

Now, it was fun but man on man what a challenge considering I only managed two cups of tea and some water today for my cleanse

I'll be checking in later............

I decided since it was a nice day to go out and run outside. I have a new respect for people who run outdoors on the cement against the wind etc. It was really hard. I walked/ran for about an hour. Unfortunately I don't think the running thing is for me unless it is on a treadmill!:( Way too hard! However, I do have a whole new respect for NF Racer now!

Running outside is not for me either. I am training myself to run indoors on the treadmill or on the trrack. The outside thing would be on rare ocassions (like a race or something)

Today I went to the gym with my sister and a friend. I did a walk/jog for a mile on the track and then 30 minutes on the elliptical. I ended my workout with some ping pong and that's about it....
