View Full Version : Feeling Queasy

Hey gang,
I just made two juices: one w/ chard, kale, carrot, and apple.
The other w/ cucumber, celery, cilantro, dill, basil stems, rosemary, ginger, apple, lime, and green grapes.
They both taste fine and I only had a few sips of each, but now I feel sort of queasy and shaky (a mild version of that feeling you get before you faint). Did I juice something I wasn't supposed to or do you think my body just isn't used to this density of nutrients?
All love,
~Adria

Methinks your combination, especially on the second one, could use a bit of thinning and/or re-organizing. Just reading that made me queasy.

LOL! What would you suggest? I'm very new to this and I just thought I'd throw in all my green things then add some fruits for sweetness. By thinning, do you mean adding water or fewer ingredients?

p.s. I just got finished listening to your radio interview w/ Alissa! Very cool.

I would say that the carrot, apple and grape are very sweet. It probably would be better not to put two very sweet fruits or vegetables together in the same drink. When you juice and drink it without it being diluted in with some water, it can make you feel queasy. Like you said the juice goes quicker into your system because of it being liquid. When I juiced, I had to sip the juice and then I would take a swig of water afterwards. It was also difficult for me to drink juices in the morning that were sweet. Beet juice has to be diluted also.

Fewer ingredients. Greens are usually referred to as leafy greens. You've added some very potent and concentrated herbs in there with the basil, ginger, cilantro, dill and rosemary.

ginger does that to me when I juice it, so does garlic and onions.

That you only had a few sips - could mean it's psychological - especially if you're new to this. The very first time I juiced something green - a bag of prewashed Romain lettuce (about four years ago), I got queasy just looking at all the green pulp and juice coming out of the machine. I think it was mostly psychological, because I knew it was going to taste nasty once I drank it. My expectations were met, it tasted as nasty and disgusting as anything I ever drank. I might have given up at this point, but . . .
I then had a hunch. If I forced myself to drink this every night for a month, would I acquire a taste for it? So, I decided to raw up (from the term "cowboy up" - do it no matter what the pain), and forced myself to drink Romain lettuce juice every night for four weeks. Right after juicing, I would let it set for fifteen minutes (tastes better warm), then I would sneak up on it and gulp it down.
HA, well what do you know. Somewhere around 3-4 weeks, it took on a MUCH more neutral taste. I would say about 80-90% of the nasty taste was gone. I could now drink it slowly without gulping. And no more queasy feeling. It will never taste as good as coolaid, and I still rinse my mouth after drinking it. But now I can easily juice two bags of prewashed Romain lettuce (12-16oz), and drink slowly with no problems. BTW, 12-16 oz of Romain lettuce juice is a WONDERFUL sleeping pill. I always juice this at night if I need something to relax me.
My experiment had benefits I could not have anticipated when I later learned about green smoothies. I can get much more green leafies in my smoothie (without it tasting bad to me), because I had already acclimated myself to the green juice taste.
Don't give up mermadria, just go slow and easy at your pace.
