I'd love to try this, if only for the added protein, plus the hemp protein powders are starting to make me gag, is this stuff good tasting?

I love it...very creamy. There is no need to strain it like with almond milk. I use half almond (strain) and half hemp seeds. (I add them after making the almond milk.) I don't care for the powder at all and prefer the seeds for everything.

Its fab!

Just add some vanilla and 2 juicy dates..blend

How long do you soak the hemp seeds? Also what ratio of seeds to water do you use? Thanks

I use hemp seeds rather than hemp protein, hemp protein is a refined product, the seed is whole and has almost as much protein (33% VS 50%) as well as the healthy fats, etc.

I never tried making hemp milk though, but bought some once premade/pasteurized to try and I didn't really like it.

for those of you who buy hemp seeds, where do you get them and what is your favorite brand?

I have only made hemp mylk a couple of times, both of which were very successful.

I soaked hemp seeds overnight in the refrigerator. I then fed the soaked seeds though a Greenpower Hippocrates (Kempo) juicer with the meshless attachment. Then I just added water to the hemp seed pulp and filtered it through a sieve. Simple as that.

I have read that some say that soaking is not required. Some people make hemp mylk by grinding unsoaked seeds in a food processor, add water and then filter.

The amount of water added (ratio of water to hemp), I think, is a personal preference issue.

What puts me off is the large quantity of pulp left over. I have no use for it (at least, I cannot think of a use) and I don't like throwing it away. And I am also unsure of exactly how nutritious the mylk I make is; I have looked-up hemp mylk nutrition, but it is determined by water to hemp ratio, and so it is hard to know for sure, I feel. And by looking at the mass of wet pulp left over, I am left wondering how much nutrition remains within it.

Are you saying you're buying the pre made hemp milk? That stuff is cooked to death and loaded with toxic chemicals (even if they aren't listed in the ingredients) as the plastic coatings on the inside leach over 200 times the legal amount of cancer causing chemicals, this applies to any food that's stored in plastic, and includes all canned foods which all have a plastic lining inside.

do you have references for your statements?
just wondering where you get your stats from.

You cant be serious?? Thats insane, How can I make or drink raw AFFORDABLE milk? Seems very expensive to make almond milk etc. I still drink coffee and hemp/soy/almond milk im really only like 95% raw. 1 cup a day.

It's much cheaper to make raw milk than buy pre made cooked milk, so I don't understand that point.

Here's a quote from an article:
"A new study spearheaded by the Environmental Working Group found the toxic chemical bisphenol A (BPA) in over 50 percent of the name-brand canned goods tested. In some cases, a single serving was enough to expose a woman or infant to BPA levels that were 200 times higher than the government's safe level for industrial chemicals."

And the complete article:

And this search on bisphenol, the toxic chemical leached into foods when in contact with plastic has many other articles on the subject:

I use a Yaoh Milk Maker and it makes awesome milk. I mix it with some cacao, maca, mesquite and carob and it tastes like chocolate milkshake. A great start to my day :)

Thanks for the article link raweater. i was wondering specifically about aseptics as they are made differently. I could not find any info on BPA content of those.

I love hemp seeds. You've encouraged me to try it. And by the way, I have also tasted the processed stuff - a friend had some and I wanted to try it. If it's anything like almond milk, the raw, fresh version will be MUCH better.

I would also like to know the seed/water ratio.

I had a quick look..

Matt Amsden suggests 1 cup hemp to 3.5 cups coco water/pure water

I think its a personal thing, its quick and easy no straining

Half cashew/hemp works also

About the bottled, its old and dead? Same reason as not to drink juice from a carton. Making fresh takes 3 minutes and is just as cheap if you look after it well!

Mmm.. You can also make instant with tahini or nut butter or hemp butter. Pretty much any seed can make milk, sunflower and pumpkin seeds are v cheap if your strapped for cash!

Raw-k on :D

I agree! I haven't bought "Milk" in over three years. My kids love raw milks, always have since day one. My norm is almond/Brazil with vanilla bean, a few nice dates and a pinch of sea salt. The boxed stuff is just really nasty.

I am going to try the hemp though. And not straining it is a definite plus. My children love hemp seeds on their salad - this will give us a new way to eat it!

Again, thanks for the reminder.

I bought a Hemp Seed shake mix (chocolate flavored) and if I use too much, it burns my throat. Perhaps you are using too much if it is making you gag. I cut down the amount I use and it's much better. That way, you can use up what you have since you've spent the $$ on it.
