My best (and also most expensive) experience so far has been at Whole Foods. I literally squealed in the middle of the aisle when I saw raweos for sale. The refrigerated section by the deli also has a bunch of pre-prepared raw food that is a great option for people on the go or for the poor saps like myself that don't have a dehydrator! I got some raw "sprouta bread"... Good, but too sweet for me.
I am also going to try hitting the farmer's market for some yummy fresh veggies and fruit.
I am curious- where does everyone find these young coconuts I am hearing so much about? I have only ever seen the brown hairy ones... Blech. Anyone from the Bay Area have any tips for finding good young coconuts?
I'm also DYING to try some dragon fruit. I have heard the flavor described as "mild" but the photos I have seen look sooooooo appetizing. :D

I'm not in the Bay Area but I live in a very small town and I buy my young coconuts at the local health food store. Supposedly, you can find them at Asian markets.
Good luck!

Try Clement Street or Chinatown. Also Geary Blvd (in the Richmond district)...some shops have them. I can't remember the names off the top of my head, but Clement street is a coconut mecca.
Rainbow sometimes has good ones too.
Oh and I shop at Rainbow Grocery when I'm in San Francisco, otherwise at my local food co-op. Rainbow Grocery's organic produce is much cheaper than almost any store I've been in...whole foods, trader joe's, my co-op included.

Most of my food comes from the health food store. I get delieveries of produce there weekly too. Sometimes that isn't enough or I can't get the specific produce I want so I will buy something at the grocery store. I buy a few things online. But my health food store is really good to order whatever I want for me so I can usually get what I need there and for a better price than at the grocery store.

I'm pretty sure Whole Foods San Rafael has them but if not the Asian market acros the street has 'em.
I stopped buying them because there is hardly any meat inside. Is this the way it should be?

It's just the Meijer between Goshen and Elkhart. Sometimes i would not find them. Then all of a sudden they had a whole bunch (in this fridge together with packaged fruits and vegetables)They are about $2.00 there. The asian store in South Bend sells them for 1.29 or so!

I live in a small town also, so I shop at the market and when I can I travel to health food store that's 35 minutes away and sometimes have my daughter stop on her way home to get me things from that store. I have to stock up when I go shopping there. I always have an extra bag of dried fruits, nuts and seeds so that when I run out I can use the extra bag and know that I need to replace it the next time I can get to the health food store. I also love the produce from my garden and the fruit and walnuts that neighbors share with me from their trees. I also seem to have people bring things to me when they know that I eat lots of fruits and veggies.....I guess they don't want to see it go bad when they know they won't be eating it.
