I tried to do a search on this, but didn't find anything. What is considred raw shredded coconut? I would like to buy some from bulkfoods.com, but want to make sure it's raw. Their website says that the coconut they sell is natural and unsulphered. Also, not sweetened.

Or, if someone can point me in the direction for another source that would be great. I did find a bag at a store I went to yesterday in another town, so I had some for the cookies I made today. But, in my local grocery store here all they have is shredded coconut that has been sweetened. That's no good.

Thanks, Jodi

Wish I could help you out more.

I simply buy mine at the local health food store, is is unsulphered and unsweatened, shredded coconut.

It doesn't say at what temperature it is dehydrated at so I simply called the manufacturer (this was Vegan Vixen's advice--smart little fairy) and they said that it was indeed sun dried.

So that is how I found out that mine was raw.

Stan Glaser sells raw products. He does have shredded coconut. I asked recently about the items not described on his site as raw. His answer was that the only product he sells that is not truly raw is the cashew nuts, which are steamed to remove the shells. www.glaserorganicfarms.com (http://www.glaserorganicfarms.com/)

Jodi...i just did a bunch of reseach on this very thing....i settled on wildernessfamilnaturals.com
when i spoke to them they told me about their coconut and the process to dry it. They were very helpful and willing to answer all my questions. they take great pains to make sure all their coconut is raw....so..... try calling them if you want more information.

i did put in a big order for their coconut products...including their coconut cream which they had on special.
I wont have the order till thursday....but i can hardly wait.
I am already dreaming up things i am going to do with it.

Thanks for the coconut sources!!! I ventured to another store today....again, about a 45 minute drive. It seems everything from the town I live is about a 45 minute drive.

This was a small health food store which has a HUGE bulk area. They have everything I need. I did find raw coconut prebagged by the NOW company. I bought 3 bags. Also find a bunch of other raw nuts and grains.

They did not have raw almond butter, but are ordering it for me. When I pick it up, I'm stopping at another store I spotted as we left the town. So, even tho it's a drive I have managed to now find 3 stores for products when I don't want to mail order. That is very cool!

I do plan on checking the sources you guys named for the coconut, though, as I do love coconut.

You guys are lucky to be able to get raw coconut. Here in Australia (and any fellow Australians please feel free to correct me if I;m wrong), I can only find dessicated/shredded coconut that have preservatives added. Even in the health food shops. I did shred some coconuts the other and dehydrated it but it would be so much easier if I could buy it in bulk.
