View Full Version : Detox symptoms: How to reduce/relieve them?

I'm just getting through a multi-day (since Thurs.) detox/flu thing. It FEELS like the flu, and even though others tell me it's probably detox, the point is...the symptoms feel the same. So... with that, I was hoping to start a thread (which prob. has been done before but couldn't find one) about how to relieve symptoms of detox.
I'm choosing to eat some cooked food during this time because honestly, I just don't want to continue to feel sick. (even if it IS detox...)
I was raw for 30 days and got these 'symptoms' on day 31.
Some folks gave me GREAT advice on another thread, and I was hoping to really get a thread going on how to reduce the symptoms. Perhaps it will help me, and also some others going through this as well. I don't want to give up, and if I feel this way, I'm sure others do too.
I've read (not on this forum) that not going 100% raw all at once will reduce detox intensity... does anyone know about this? I'd LOVE to know more.
I just sort of dove in, and relieved the migraines I was having (GREAT benefit), yet being this sick isn't helping me want to stay on track.
ANY words of wisdom, suggestions, support, experiences, etc. is GREATLY appreciated!

adding more (raw) fats will slow detox... some prefer to fast or even water fast through detox to get it over with. enemas/colonics help.
You want your body to be detoxing as much as possible through your bowels! So drink up with the green smoothies. :) And drink lots of water.
Sweating it out with exercise helps too.

I know detoxing is miserable, and how tempting it becomes to give up! But hang on! Once you are through it you really feel a sense of accomplishment. I know that that doesn't help you right now. :) What foods have you tried? I found citrus fruits helpful as well as melons. I think I was dehydrated (I also had flu like symptoms) and the water content in these foods helped. I took ACV, water, lemon juice and cayenne every night and I would really recommend that. I felt so tired that I couldn't really exercise, but I'm sure it would have helped, kind of speed up the release of the toxins. I have also read that water fasting it super helpful. Honestly, I just sat around, ate fruit when I felt like it, drank my ACV water and waited it out. I slept and napped when I could. I have 3 kids so that was tricky:) That all being said, if you feel like transitioning slower into raw, go for it. There are as many ways to become raw as there are people and we have our whole lives to do it!
Hope you feel better soon!

IF it's the flu and not detox... adding cooked foods will slow down your recovery.

Thank you for all of your support and suggestions.
I know that cooked food will delay this, and it's been a bit of a journey for me to eat some and discover that I don't really want/need it. It's just harder when you don't feel well (okay, when you REALLY feel awful...) to make the best choices. I just have gotten sort of fed up.
beckx: I do add raw fats every day, (avos, nuts/seeds, evoo, flax) so I think I'm ok there. I totally understand that water fasting would help, yet I'm simply not ready for that. I'm sure I'll get to the point where it won't feel like such a deprivation, but for now, just trying to stay raw is a challenge enough. Colonics and enemas may help as well, yet again, I'm barely into the raw lifestyle and that feels over the top at the moment. Hey...raw felt that way even last year to me, so who knows??? Most likely in time I'll be able to do it all. Thanks though! Great advice.
Eva GMTA!!! I was just having my first GS in DAYS when I read your reply. Tasted 'off' to me, but I do feel much better after drinking it. Water has tasted 'off' to me too since I started raw a month ago. I generally splash some lemon and agave with it and it's GREAT! Haven't been exercising, so I KNOW I need to get with it soon. Pulled out my workout DVD yesterday...once I am a bit more up to par, I will begin again. Thank you!
Liserpiece I truly appreciate you sharing some of your own experience. It helps to know that others have the same struggles, and have gotten to the other side. I've been eating tons of oranges as I've been craving juicy fruits for days now. I also started ACV yesterday...not too fond of the taste, but I know it will help me. I'll try your suggestion of the ACV concoction....I drink that anyway without the ACV, so should be fine.
Thanks for all of your help!
recycling goddess Yes, I know it's true that cooked food will slow down recovery, yet I really didn't feel like facing ANY raw foods. Even bananas tasted terrible to me, and I LOVE them! I didn't feel like anything except soup, so I had soup. I'm still learning all of 'right ways' and 'not so right ways' to do this, so it's all trial and error. All-in-all, I think it will be good to see how even a bit of cooked food makes me feel tired, etc. I hear a lot of people say that it sounds MUCH better in their minds than it actually tastes. I'm finding that to be absolutely true!
Thanks everyone.... would love more info from anyone that would like to offer it.

Liserpiece The ACV drink is GREAT! I wanted another once I was done! I added agave and it was soooo good! Thanks for that! It makes ACV a LOT more palatable.

Hi Lightspirited One!
I feel your pain. I am one month raw and at about the third week I went through that. But it doesn't last long if you stay true. I remember when I went through the detox I felt like raw food was poisioning me and upon waking up in the morning felt like I was making a mistake. Then I went on the internet and read all I could about the detox phase and realized it was normal and it DOES go away. If you can just keep doing what you're doing and stay away from cooked, you'll come out of the valley and end up on the top!!
Everyone already shared GREAT advice about how to handle the food side of it so I guess something I might add is that seeking knowledge (JUST LIKE YOU DID) :)
and having faith that what you're doing is right and that your body will love you for it.
These things are essential. I might suggest just You-tubing people's experiences with raw. That REALLY got me through it. You-tube David Wolfe...that will keep the flame alive, no doubt!
Cheers and keep up the work!! It's so worth it :) I lost 6 pounds in the first week and a half and keep dropping. Excercise is good, I think I saw it mentioned.
You'll make it through :)
Lightspirited1 -- I don't know what GMTA means, but I gather that was helpful for you! I really believe that the body really, really wants to get rid of EVERYthing harmful and toxic through the bowels for us. That's what the intestines are for, and green smoothies help facilitate movement with that big time.
No green smoothies (or not enough -- less than at least a quart a day), not enough water... this is a setup for detox you can FEEL instead of smell. haha.
I LOVE detox! (But, um, not through headaches, eye infections, skin issues, etc.)
Oh sheesh. What have I come to?! haha Sorry to bring so much poopy talk into this thread!

RawkokoGirl Thank you for sharing your experience. It DOES help to know that others have experienced this too. (The feeling that perhaps raw food isn't what we need...hmmm...yet it IS!) I knew raw foods were good for me, but my body just couldn't handle eating it the first few days when I REALLY was ill. Next time I'll know better how to handle it with a bit more grace (and understanding).
I'm beginning to see a light at the end of the detox phase tunnel. (Phase 1, I presume?) Still not feeling terrific, but chose to stick with raw as suggested and let it see me through. I've taken a few non-aspirins (& homeopathics) here and there because the headaches and body aches were awful, but otherwise, getting back into the raw groove.
Funny that you mentioned YouTube...I had gone there early last night to find some simple recipes and came across a few personal experiences. You're right, it does help! I must have picked up your brain waves before you wrote! LOL So, thank you!
What part of the Pacific Northwest do you live in? I'm in Western Washington.
Eva GMTA means Great Minds Think Alike. Yep, it's a good thing! Sorry, I use it often with folks, and it's almost like a word to me now. ha ha ha
Yeah, the detox is good....the coming out from the other side of it part - not the going through it part. Yet, there's been lots of great suggestions and I feel like I have a bit better handle on it.
I am really beginning to see how Green Smoothies play a LARGE part in good health on raw. I was drinking about a pint or so a day and stopped for a few days. (Got busy with other things and didn't go shopping...) Then, I got sick. I didn't listen to my body (in retrospect...of course) that I was feeling tired/drained. Next time I'll RUN to the store, get the smoothie supplies, and blend away!
I've learned a lot!
Thank you for all of your suggestions.

REST, REST, REST and more REST and then some sleep!!! :-)
Eating lightly and resting and sleeping as much as possible will speed the process and you will feel sooo much better when you get past it. :-)
It will pass soon!!!

THANK YOU, Chilove!
REST -that's been part of the problem since I'm coughing so much and then congested in my sinuses. I wake up just about every hour for the last 6 nights... I can feel it working through my body now and I'm certainly not feeling as sick, yet I am still not very perky - yet. Luckily I have the space and time to get extra rest. I'm not a napper, so I just keep myself as quiet as possible.
You've had quite a transformation....you look amazing!!!
Thank you for your support.

Sweating it out with exercise helps too.
Even if you're not sweating, get out, get some fresh air, sunlight, etc. The house breeds toxins. Get out and get some air!
IF it's the flu and not detox... adding cooked foods will slow down your recovery.
If it's detox and not the flu (since there's no such thing as flu), adding cooked foods will slow down the process.

Thanks Revvell....great suggestion (just get out), and something I definitely will do! It's raining today, and it's something I don't mind at all.
I've gotten away from the cooked foods, and realized it was just my mind playing out its 'thing'. I am on the road back to feeling well again, and I'm sure a few more days will bring that back along with raw.
I appreciate your input greatly.

I'm so glad to read you liked the ACV concoction! It sounds like your feeling better?? Hang in there!

Yes, I did (and am) enjoying the ACV mix. Woke up this morning early (after another hard night) and made a cup first thing. Took it back to bed with me and sipped it while I read a bit. Heaven! Very soothing... Funny, because Easter just passed, the scent reminds me of easter egg coloring (although I've not done that for years!)
I am feeling better...bit by bit...thanks! Keeping it raw again.
I appreciate all of your support and kindness.
