Ok....I made the Flax crackers and I didn't like them at all. I thought maybe it was the way I made them so I bought a bag at Mothers. They taste the same way?

Can you make crackers out of sunflower seeds or something esle and if so, do they have the same flavor? Becaue I'm NOT digging these flax crackers at all!!! :(

I'm so with you. Flax is too strong of a flavor for me. I still have to try the corn chips, so I am hoping that they will redeem raw crackers.

Can't be of much help to you though. Sorry.

There are lots of other types of crackers. I personally like flax, but it does have a "slimy" kind of mouth feel once you've begun chewing it. There are many other types of crackers at Mother's Market. In fact, I was there today and here's what I bought (all organic and raw):

Green Crackers - Lydia's Organics. These are simply AWESOME. They have a bunch of green veggies (spinach, colalrds, aruguala, kale, etc) and other veggies, as well as almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, etc. There are also sprouted flax seeds but I don't taste them. The veggies and greens aren't overpowering, in fact it's more of a veggie flavored chip, very nice and mild. These are very crisp and cracker like and if you had a SAD eater close their eyes, they'd never know they were raw. I love them with Back to Life's raw organic hummus. Yummmmm!!!

Sesame Ginger Sticks - Good Mood Food. These are really good as well. They are more of a stick than a cracker, but they're thin enough to still be used for dipping. They are sunflower seed and sesame seed based. They also have a little flax seeds, but not much and I don't taste them at all. I eat these with GMF's Zucchini hummus style dip. Drool....

Raw Wheat Free Crusts - Mauk Family Farms. These are pretty thick, they're made to be used as a base for a "pizza" or an open faced sandwich. However I just break them into 4 or so pieces each and use them to dip. I love them. Again they have flax, but it's a minor ingredient. Sunflower seeds are the main ingredient to me, along with sesame seeds. Then you also see some golden and brown flax seeds, but don't taste them.

BTW My fav actual flax chips are Good Mood Food's Flax chips with Tomatoes. They are very thin (almost too thin to dip in raw hummus) and the tomato really tastes great. They use a combo of golden and brown flax and that tends to make them "milder" to me.

Mother's has a whole section of raw food chips, crackers, cookies and other goodies. I don't know which one you go to, but the one in Irvine has them right past the front door, near the deli.

Smoothie - you might want to try the "onion bread variation" that (at the moment) is a few posts down from here.

Thanks Virgina...that's the one I go to. Next time I'll try the one's you suggested. I started with the flax hoping that maybe it was my culinary abilty. The cookies are to die for but I didn't buy any today. I just eat to may of them.

My hubby hates flax, so I have to disguise it in foods.

I make flax meal and that seems to be okay, but the little buggy looking seeds all slimey he does NOT like.

So, now I make crackers with almonds and carrots and he loves those.

You might like to try nuts instead of seeds (actually all nuts are seeds-but who's counting?)

It was pm Friday and I didn't have enough munchies to take for 3 days on a trip. My husband and I are both raw foodists (6+ weeks now), and don't intend to return to the old life style (vegetarian primarily). Eating raw foods is so easy and tastes wonderful. He is battling lymphoma, so we decided to switch to raw foods...what a difference !! Anyway, I had to put something together quickly that would dehydrate overnight, so we could leave that morning. These were really yummy and had a great texture. They weren't quite sturdy enough to 'dip', but help up well in travel and were better tasting than ANY grocery cracker I have ever eaten. They weren't thin or flimsy...just not sturdy enough to dip into something like a thick 'cream cheese' type dip. They'd be fine for creamy dips. I made them again today and they were spread thinner. My husband liked them a bit thicker, so I'll remember that for the next time. I personally liked them fine the way they were, but I know that other people like to spread or dip crackers, that was the reason for my comment.

The coconut oil seems to held hold them together since it is solid at room temp.
Those of you who are purists don't need to challenge the ingredients, merely adjust to your dietary preferences.

1/3 c ground flax (not soaked)
2 cups frozen corn...let it thaw
8 dried tomato halves (not in oil)
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup walnuts
garlic to taste
1/2 tsp cayenne (more if you like it spicy)
3 tbls coconut oil

Mix in food processor. Pat thin (1/8"-1/4")on teflex. Cut into squares with pizza cutter to pressing a large blade (don't drag a knife through to cut it)before putting into dehydrator. Turn onto mesh sheet when partially dry, and continue to dry, at your temp and until dry. I used about 110 degrees (less temp. more time)

To turn easily, put an unused mesh sheet on top of crackers, and put a tray on top of that. Hold everything together and turn over. Peel back teflex and cracker will stay put on new mesh screen.

You can add almost anything to flax to make a cracker to disguise the flavor and texture, and it will still hold together. You can make them sweet (nuts, coconut, coconut oil, cinnamon) or savory. You can grind them in a coffee grinder, a small amount at a time, after soaking. Just wipe out the grinder well. This also works well to help bind veggie burgers.

Here is an old favorite that I hadn't made in a while...until tonight!

This recipe was originally submitted to me by member Sweetlips. They have a very "cheesy" flavor to them, esp. if you add pine nuts and nut. yeast (not raw, but living) and perhaps even if you don't add nutritional yeast, they'll still taste kinda "cheesy".

Anyway, they use NO flaxseed and they're good...kinda reminds you of Cheez-It or Cheese Nips type of crackers in a way.

we use these like bread, or a tortilla. if made thick enough, it can be be a scooper!

This is a response that was provided to someone who did not have pine nuts:

I just made these yesterday. I used 1 whole bell pepper with about 1/4 to 1/3 c cashews and a pinch or two of salt. The I did another batch using the same amount of pine nuts instead of the cashews. Both batches tasted great and cheesy, and I guess I'd call it closest to cheddar. The pine nuts just added a, well, pinier taste.

These sound great. Thanks. I'm "cooking" the onion crackers right now so I'll try these green peppers ones next.

Good Mood Cafe! I keep meaning to go there - I get their dips and crackers from Mother's (Irvine or Costa Mesa) but never seem to make it to the cafe. I have every other Friday off too, so no excuse like I have to work.

We shoud get all the OC and LA folks together and meet there for a lunch or dinner. I would love to meet some raw foodists in my area! My hubby is a SAD eater and I don't know anyone else who is even a vegetarian :(
