I thought I was buying fruit, not bacteria -- where's the cat? Where's the cradle?

Anyway, I just finished eating two cantaloupes before I read this. Fortunately, I'm in MA, and my cantaloupe comes from Mexico, not Honduras.

No its not hard as long as you stay on top of the weeds and have enough space. I have 8 acres of land and finally have a garden. I want to be (kind of) self sufficient as our economy could fall. (as many are predicting).
So I am learning to grow from seeds and hope to sustain myself some day.
It May sound odd but many people are doing this where I live.
The signs are there.
Its all new to me and mostly I am learning from the INTERNET.

No I don't think it sounds odd at all. I would LOVE to be self sutaining myself. Maybe I'll start with cantaloups. hehehehehe

My cantaloupe seeds just sprouted yesterday.
Hygeia - if you want to grow cantaloupe in MA, you should start the seeds in some potting soil indoors right now. Keep them somewhere warm (80-90 degrees F) until they sprout. Then grow them under flourescent lights until Mother's Day. On Mother's day you can transplant the potted cantaloupe seeds out to your garden. MA has such a short growing season that fruits like cantaloupe, watermelon, and tomatoes need to get a head start indoors.

I just ate 3 cantaloups in the past 3 days. Perhaps this is why they where 1/2 price?

No kidding!...88 cents each at Sprouts for large, sweet cantaloupe! I have eaten 2 a day for the past week. Thank goodness I haven't gotten sick, must not have been from Honduras. :)

I ate one the other day without knowing about this too, hope none of us get sick.

I wonder how quickly the symptoms show up?

Wait- can the 'innards' of canteloupe be green like that of honeydew melon?

Because I was just watching the news, and long comes a brief depicting the president of Honduras eating canteloupe, in an effort to prove that his country's canteloupe is 'safe' (even though, according to the news, salmonella was traced in canteloupe in 16 different states in Honduras:eek: ), but the canteloupe was green, which I've never witnessed... The rind looked like that of a canteloupe, though, not honeydew....

Anyway, if in fact he was eating his country's canteloupe- best of luck to him!!! And to all of us who are still wondering whether the canteloupes we consumed within the last week were from Honduras:o
