I know that getting EFA's are important for the body. I was wondering what you eat in order to maintian a good amount of fats in the diet. Also if anyone knows how much fat a woman needs to consume per day?

Avocados, seeds and nuts. I don't concern myself with "how much", etc. I eat a variety of foods and let my body decide if it needs more of something.

Seems to me how much ANYbody needs of anything on any day depends on the person actually.

My feeling is, most folk here are still coming from the SAD understanding of "having to" make sure they get "enough" of this and "enough" of that. That's understandable since their colons tend to be so clogged up it's hard to assimilate much of anything.

As one stays raw long enough, their body cleanses, the nutrients they consume are assimilated and they can just enjoy eating w/out concerns for "enough". btw ~ ALL raw, organic, natural, foods do have fats, carbs and proteins. They just vary in their amounts.

Enjoy! :)

No flax? I was just wondering about the whole hormonal thing because from what I know fats are essential for hormones and also brain function for that matter. I had heard of women getting below a certain %of body fat and not having periods anymore. I guess if I am going to start eating mostly raw, which means cutting out meat from diet, I want to make sure I do it the right way. Right now I eat meat every few days and then eat almonds, sunflower, and pumpkin seeds. Oh and avacodos, love them! I'm sure I am getting enough fats at this point, but I think I am also used to getting fat from mostly meat.

Thanks,

Angela

Angela,

Alissa explains this all in the her book very well. Since you're still concerned about meeting the needs that arise from a SAD diet, you might consider getting and reading the book. You will find it simple ... and fabulous.

It's incredibly freeing to learn that you needn't worry about these things once you go raw. At all. Really. Truly.

By the way ... what are you waiting for?

Yes, flax seeds are a good choice for fats.

No flax?
Angela

Uhhh, yeah, I did mention seeds. I keep flax crackers around all the time. They are really convenient to munch on when hungry. Can top with sliced cuke and tomato, add a basil leaf OR, some avocado OR some almond butter, raisins and a drizzle of agave and you've got snacks! :)

what are guidelines for when to eat fats, proteins, and grains?
i just have no idea how to replace the calories i'm getting now on a SAD diet with a raw diet.
and since nuts and seeds are so high in calories and fats, i want to know how much to eat, especially since I want to lose weight.
can you mix protein with grain?

Eat what makes YOU feel right , youll know! I personally feel bad with nuts , so I dont eat them , obviously you dont want to lay around eating so much that you puke ,BUT eat when you are satisfied , make sure you get plenty of fresh greens and fruits and you will be fine :)

Hi,

Since this is a RAW Vegan lifestyle, not a diet that you go on, then go off at some distant time in the future, when you have acheived a specific goal, you will be eating this way for a long time.

In Rhio's "Hooked on Raw", book she talks about food combining and it isn't necessary in a Raw food lifestyle, but if you are going to eat some cooked food then it is majorly important.

I believe that when you go raw, much like Alissa says in her uncook book, thanthe most important thing is to just do it, and eat what ever you want, when ever you want as long as it is raw.

As far as fats go, there are several that are recommended by the raw foods community, Extra Virgin Olive oil, either Bariani or Tree of Life brand, and coconut oil or sometimes called coconut butter, make sure it's raw, or flax seed oil.

These you can add to foods, smoothies, dehydrated dishes, crackers, soups etc. to get your fats.

You also get fats from nuts, avocados, flax seeds, flax meal, and other seeds and nuts.

So, you WILL loose weight eating raw, even if you each alot of nuts and seeds, you don't need to count calories or carbs or any of that stuff.

However, if you do want to count all that, you can go to www.fitday.com and it is all there for you.

<<can you mix protein with grain?>>

I'm not sure how much this question is relevant to a raw diet, especially raw vegan. Diets that food combine and don't mix proteins with grains are generally talking about animal protein. I did Marilu Henner's Total Health Makeover for awhile, and they don't mix protein with grain, but they do combine soy with grain. And grains aren't used much, if at all, on a raw diet. People that I hear eating rice or wheat seem to be sprouting it, and the sprout is a whole different thing from the grain itself.
