The health food store closest to my home is tiny, and as of yet hasn't carried any raw nut butters. Today I spotted a "RAW" Almond butter by "Once Again". The Ingredients list "Unblanched almonds", but under the description is says something about their nuts being roasted and what not... How dubious and confusing! Odd... Any thoughts?

I'm finding more and more that prepackaged "raw" foods are questionable. I contacted Maranatha, the brand of raw almond butter I used to buy and they said that the butter they produce isn't raw as far as raw foodist's standards go... the grinding process actually heats the nuts to too high a degree. Plus they don't soak the almonds before making the butter, not a big surprise, that is kind of a tall order. :) This prompted me contact the makers of my "raw" tahini, Arrowhead Mills, as well as Hogdston Mills for my ground flax seed and I got the same story. Now I read that my coconut butter isn't really raw either... :(

It is all confusing!

I think raw foodists have different standards and our definitions of what is raw may be more strict and certainly more important to us than the average consumer.

Hey, just eat it. It won't kill you!! It may not be optimum but it won't hurt you!! Enjoy your almond butter. YUM!!

I did:D

Why? Because the nuts we buy in stores these days aren't raw, anyway!!!! And this includes more than just the well-known pasteurizied almond.

But I definately will NOT be buying that nut butter again, as it made me itch... A reaction most nuts ignite for me, only this was a stronger itch...
