I have personally never used this, but everyone has always said good things about it and believed it is raw. I've just been informed by the company that it is NOT raw  . Only their hemp products are. Annoying because every website says it's raw, including some raw ones.

They're suppose to be adding a raw oil in June.

It's getting more & more annoying to find that products who've been claiming to be raw, turn out to not be. Guess you need to question everything extensively.

It says it is raw on it's label! I know not to believe everything you believe but this is infuriating. Their oil is very delicious and to find out it isn't raw is very discouraging. Thank you for investigating!

Grr...that's the brand I'm using now. What are some of your favorite *truly raw* brands?

I just called Nutiva, as I am a research fiend...

They said that they just learned about 8 months ago that the product is not technically raw as it is air dried in an environment with temperatures over 115 degrees. They changed the labelling to reflect this (removed the "raw" wording) and are planning on launching a fair-trade truly raw coconut oil in July 2008.

Funny, I've gotten that one before. It just doesn't taste as good!

I admire Nutiva for their full disclosure. Coconut oil is actually stable at high temperatures so even if the product is dried at a temperature higher than 115degrees, it may still retain full enzymatic activity.

in my opinion, wildernessfamilynaturals.com has the best RAW coconut oil out there. i have tried quite a few different other brands and this one is the best to me. i will admit that, no, i have not tried alissa's which i am positive is VERY good, but i buy it at a gallon a time, so that is why i get it elsewhere. but if i were to buy and use less, than i would try alissa's.

Being "stable" for fats/oils means that the individual fatty acids keep their chemical structure and integrity at temperatures higher than 115 degrees. Coconut oil is the one fat in nature that will not form (or to a minimal degree) trans fatty acids when heated. That is why it is the healthiest oil recommended for cooking. All other fats will form significant quantities of dangerous trans fatty acids when heated.

Enzymatic activity is related to proteins staying functional. Almost all enzymes are made of proteins. Proteins start to disintegrate at 104-115 degrees. Coconut oil heated higher than 115 degrees will not have any live enzymes.

If nutiva says that their product is still "stable" even though it has been heated, they are talking about fatty acids and not enzymes.

That's too bad about the nutiva. Although I'm sure Alissa's coconut oil is great, I prefer to buy things at local stores rather than order them online, as I have no credit card. I really like Jarrow's extra virgin organic coconut oil. It's cheaper per ounce than nutiva's if you buy it in 32 oz jars. This is what it says on their website about it's "rawness."

Extra Virgin (or Virgin) Organic Coconut Oil is the oil that is derived from fresh coconut flesh of fresh coconut fruit. The coconut meat is processed within 4 hours after fresh coconut meat is obtained. The names “Extra Virgin” and “Virgin” can be used interchangeably. There is very little oxidation or contamination during the processing of extra virgin coconut oil. Jarrow Formulas’ Extra Virgin Coconut Oil is cold pressed. The flesh undergoes drying indoors at low heat (80 F) for two hours before pressing to reduce the water content in order to prevent hydrolytic rancidity. With this method, the volatile compounds that impart the familiar coconut flavor are preserved, resulting in that familiar, fresh coconut flavor.

Maybe your body has found its ideal weight, have you considered that? I think most people, when doing raw right and for a certain period of time, eventually settle into their body's preferred weight naturally.... Perhaps you are just not meant to be stick thin, if you aren't already (I have no clue what you look like, but judging from that teeny photo on your profile I can tell you are not overweight:p )...??

My body seems to love the weight that it's at. I have lost as much as 10 pounds but it always seems to fly back on. *sigh*

yeah, the Nutiva coconut oil just tastes weird to me too. It doesn't taste good compared the other "raw" coconut oil. Not surprised if it isn't really raw.

It sort of has a bit of a "meaty" taste and smell (and not coconut meat).

Nahh I think I'm just healing my metabolism after some abuse for awhile...I think it's in "conservation mode"...based on what I've read, it could take a couple years for my thyroid + adrenals + metabolism to repair and feel comfortable.

Oh no, I bought so many 1 gallon jars when it was on sale. I ordered on line a while back, so I can't return it anymore. This is really bad because a few other raw retail stores also carried this brand.

If they are not open, I think you can sell them on ebay (if you wanted to)...or you can use them...I'll use mine up.

Though it is sad because this was the only brand that the local stores carried.

You could use it for hair and body moisturizer! Just a thought... That's what I do with the other brand I tried and didn't like (NOW).

I ONLY like the taste of the coco de creme. Alissa sells that, and I sometimes buy it elsewhere when I want monster-sized quantities. :)

Has anyone tried the Fresh Shores that Dr. Mercola sells? I have been trying to decide on that and Alissas since locally I can only get nutiva.

rainwolf -- I don't know about that one... but seriously, the only that I've tried without a weird aftertaste is the kind Alissa sells.

I practically had a coconut oil graveyard for a while until I started using the "others" for moisturizer and Alissa's for the taste. ;)

I believe that Nutiva expects to have a raw version within the next few months.

This is why I say....always listen to your body.

Years ago when I first starting taking this Nutiva oil on a spoon because of all the raves I heard about it, I could hardly stand to put this in my stomach. I remember feeling nauseated just trying to swallow it and now I know why, because my body was trying to tell me that IT WAS NOT RAW....H-E-L-L-00000!!!!!! Now, I use another truly raw brand, and I don't have that gag reflex.

Now, I really pay attention to that gag-reflex thing about anything I ingest. If it doesn't agree with me, no matter how much everyone raves about it, I will listen to my body.

Isn't it amazing how our bodies will talk to us if we pay attention??

I use this oil (Nutiva) for cooking and sauteing only.

Here's the info from Nutiva:
Dry Expeller Pressed 170º F, conveyed through a hot-air dryer.

So far they haven't come out with their raw version they've mentioned for the past year.

I appreciate that Nutiva is honest about the processing.

I use Omega Nutrition (certified organic) coconut oil. It's unrefined and suitable for raw diets....and it's yummie!
