View Full Version : Only water in my young coconuts

I first found a place that had young coconuts between Christmas and New years. They had very, very little meat, barely a tablespoon of meat per entire coconut!

I just got more today and this time they where quite small and had only water and no meat at all! The water also tastes much less than usual.

I was so happy when I finally found young coconuts as I could finally make recipes that require some, but I still haven't been able to since they have no meat or a spoonful at most.

Are you guys getting the same thing? By the way I don't get the ones shaved into a pointy top which are dipped in formaldehyde, the store also sells whole green coconuts and those are the ones I get.

I still get them as it's actually cheaper to get the water only coconuts than getting pasteurized coconut water at the health food store (I buy them for the water).

Thanks

Hey there,

That is strange. I have never not had meat-sometimes it has been thin and purple and I threw it out because I am thinking it was bad, but usually I do not have any problems.

Maybe the green ones just have less meat? As you probably notice, the mature coconuts have that thickest meat so maybe it gradually gets thicker and the water gradually gets sweeter.

Shouldn't the farmers know when to pick them so they do have meat? I mean this is almost like fruit farmers collecting flowers instead of fruits and not noticing, ok maybe the difference isn't as apparent on the outside but I would think they would know when to pick them? Why pick them when they haven't grown anything at all?

This almost makes me want to get the pointy shaved ones that are dipped in formaldehyde, but the last one I had tasted like formaldehyde all the way through to the water, it was horrible, maybe I'll give one another try.

I just opened my 2nd young green coconut from this batch I got yesterday (got 3 youngs, 1 mature) and this one did have about 1/8-1/4" of meat all around!

I think it's the ones that are shaved/cone shaped on the top (it's more than obvious they are man made, nothing would grow that shape in nature). The natural ones are unmodified as they fall from the tree.

Here's a picture I found, you can see the white/pointy top ones, those must be dipped in toxic chemicals which is normally formadehyde, it's the only way to prevent the exposed flesh from rotting, you can also see the whole green coconuts in the back, those are the ones I get:

By the way, did you try asian markets and that type of place? If you did, did you ask if they could order some? It also happened once that the store I normally get them from didn't have any, so that's why you should ask even if you can't find any in the store, maybe they just didn't have any the day you went but normally have them. It took me like 2 years before I found some, and I found them at a nearby asian market I had never gone to before. I also found special spices and other things there I couldn't find elsewhere like tamarind and hing/asafoetida (a spice Dr. Cousens uses).

About 80-90% of what's sold in "health food" stores is deadly junk (better than 99% for conventional grocery stores), they have TONS of processed foods with aspartame, msg, hidden msg, other carcinogens, etc. It's not because something is sold in a health food store that it's healthy, I would never eat 95% of what's in my health food store.

Wow thanks so much Raweater....the photo is a great help, and it does make sense that nature wouldn't form something that looks like a modern house. I did try local asian markets, but i've yet to go to the biggest one in this city, which is a bit to travel to. I'm sooo glad I interacted with you first now i know what to look for!

I second that about health food stores.....I usually only buy a few items there, but when I changed all my personal care products to natural and found that SO MANY of their products were just as bad as grocery store brands, it really opened my eyes.

had a thought when i was walking today that rings true here: convenience kills. if you want the best for yourself, make it yourself or eat from the purest source. just like our coconuts here.......i mean who would really thinks 'healthy or not?' in the produce department?? my thought usually is: it's a fruit or a nut so of course it's good and natural.

enter the genetically modified fruits here.. like apple berries, etc.....OY!!! don't get me started.....lol

so what causes the thai coconuts to be shaped that way? i mean obviously its done by man, but how and why? and are the ones that are pointed like that called thai coconuts or are they called something else? i know the mature coconut is brown, and i guess that means that the young ones are the green ones in the photo with the pointy ones, correct? so are the thai coconuts like a gmo food? wow, lots a questions, thanks for any answers!

I would imagine they are shaved like that to cut on weight which in turn cuts on shipping costs. The reason the mature ones are brown is that the green husk around it is removed, not sure why it's not removed on young ones but I would imagine maybe the shell isn't hard enough to protect the nut by itself when it's young.

I don't think the pointy/thai ones are gmo, they're "just" soaked in chemicals to preserve the exposed flesh.

I only ever buy the usual brown coconuts, never have seen any others.
