This is my second week of all raw vegan. I eat smoothies, salads, nuts, goji berries, mulberries, spirulina, and fruit.

My blood sugar was 151 this morning, the highest it has been in over 2 years. I don't know what I am doing wrong.

Any other diabetics out there and what did you do.

What do you put in your smoothies? Something I've learned... I know a lot of people swear by the green smoothies, but I have difficulty with them. Yes, they are a great way to get your greens, but when you blend up the fruit and greens you break down the fiber, kind of making it predigested. The fiber in fruit slows down the absorption process, (slowing the sugar absorption). This slower digestion/absorption is important for those with blood sugar issues. So when you predigest your fruit as you would in a smoothie you speed up the sugar absorption. With me, if I have a smoothie I get a sugar rush and feel queasy. I gave them up and eat most of my fruit as close to "natural" as I can and have my greens in big salads. Just a thought and don't mean to dis the GS's!! :)

Have you checked out the book by Gabriel Cousens called There is a cure for diabetes? He runs a supervised diabetes retreat at the Tree of Life center in Arizona. I don't have personal experience with diabetes, but I did have
pre-diabetes and unstable blood sugar. I have had to go easy on some sweet fruits like oranges, apples, and bananas. I hope you feel great very soon!!

Ooohhh! I'm gonna get that book, as Diabetis runs strong in my family. Thanks for the link!

I can not eat much at all in the way of fruit. Some fruit is very high in carbs. Luckily I don't like fruit so not eating it is not a problem. I do like goji berries and I find I can eat about a spoonful of them at a time, provided my blood sugar was not too high to start. I can eat a few thin slices of apple or pear on a salad. A couple of strawberries or cherries in season. 1/2 a grapefruit. Occasional dates in some dessert recipe of which I eat maybe 1 sq. inch. Or an orange in nut cheese. That's about the extent of my fruit eating.

And remember not all fruits are the same in terms of carbs. Most diabetics find they can not eat bananas ever, but they might be able to eat somewhat large amounts of berries that are lower in carbs.

One of our naturopaths here in MO thinks that everyone should never eat fruit without some protein, to help slow down the sugar rush. Would adding some nuts to your meal when you're having a gs help? Also, I recall from Alissa's book that sometimes people with diabetes have to go slowly with fruit in the beginning of being RAW, but then can add more fruit into their diets. Good luck!! :)

Nuts are more fat than protein. The greens are a better source of protein so, it seems, if one is drinking green smoothies it would balance out.

Yep, I agree with this, I have found the same thing with juices/smoothies if there is much sweet fruit in them.

In Alissa's book, she said that people with diabetes should eat nuts and fruit together for at least the first 2 weeks, after that you can try just eating fruits by themselves. Then, you shouldn't have a problem.
