Okay, I know the rancid smell that nuts get so I sortof know what I am looking ofr BUT I have a flax question.

I keep my seeds whole and in teh freezer and then I grind one serving as I use them. This morning I made the ususal, a smoothie and I added about 1 - 2 tbs. of ground flax. I didn't have any greens available this morning so I just used orange and pineapple. The Problem is: my smoothie tastes kinda weird. It almost has a sour taste to it.

The Question: if flax goes bad while still whole will you be able to smell it or not until it's ground?

Thanks!

Great question,

I've had my flax seeds in the freezer for months on end and never had a challenge, however, I have (unfortunately) often had a bad orange or pineapple, that I couldn't tell was bad until I actually tasted it.

I know that the flax have a lot of oil in them, so if it tasted sour, I wouldn't think the rancid seed would taste sour, however bad orange juice, or pineapple will (I've drunk alot of "old" juice) in my time as people love to make it for me, then serve it to me when I come over, the challenge is they make it hours before I visit them, and what are you to do?

I always say thank you soooooo much for going through all that trouble.

and "won't you have some with me?" but alas, I end up drinking fermented juice, but it still tastes good, just a little weird.
