View Full Version : No weight loss on fast?

Hi there...

I'm not new to juice fasting, as I have done several and lost weight every time. I am now on day 6 of a fast and have only lost 2 pounds, and I am shocked! I am not doing anything differently than previous fasts. I also have weighed less than this on my other fasts, so I know it's not my body telling me there is no weight to be released... because there is!

What can be the cause of this? Water retention? I am so bummed. I don't know what to do. I was aiming for 10 days... but now I want to quit and eat a salad!

Thoughts?

well fasting for weight loss is really not a good idea. fasting slows your metabolism down.

but... you will release what is meant to release. there is no rhyme or reason... it just simply IS.

I think one can lose weight from fasting. It's not for everyone... I've done short fasts where I haven't lost weight but that doesn't mean my body /mind/spirit didn't get a lot from it. But I have lost significant weight from fasting and kept it off so I am a big believer in fasting for weightloss. However I think if one only does a fast for weightloss you'll run into trouble. There are so many things that happen when one fasts, to ignore them is to ignore your body. If your ego gets too wrapped up in body image or in weightloss (which is a huge issue for most women) then it can really sabotage a lovely fast. I knwo I've done it! On the other hand there is nothing wrong with wishing to lose weight if you need to. It's healthy. Just don't let your mind forget that there are many other wonderful things about you that get nourished from fasting.
One thing I've found is when I consume too little juice my body starts holding on to weight. So maybe try drinking even more juice and see what happens. Look at all of the other ways this fast is helping your body. See if there are other reasons to fast, if not maybe you should quit and do another fast at another time.
Good luck to you!:D I wish you the best!

2 lbs. in 6 days is actually pretty good! What is your starting weight & how tall are you? What was your diet like before the fast? What juices are you drinking? Looking at it as objectively as you can, are you sure you're not doing ANYTHING differently on this fast as your previous fasts?

I know that fasting strictly for weight loss is never a good idea. I fast for many reasons... cleansing, re-setting my palate, having that high on life attitude, great sleep, abundant energy. Like I said, I have fasted several times before. The weight loss is always merely an added benefit.

This time I am fasting because I NEED to lose weight! I model, and I have a meeting with my agent at the end of the month. I have gained a lot of weight since our last meeting and no longer match the measurements printed on my comp cards, and I don't have an extra $800 to do new ones. So a fast is the safest and most effective way I know of to drop extra pounds quickly. I like the business I am in... but the business is based primarily on how you look. I LOVE the other benefits I am experiencing from this fast... but I wanna know why the pounds are sticking this time around.

I did increase the amount of juice I am drinking. The only thing that I'd say is different with this fast is that I am drinking fresh young coconut water and about 2 kombucha tea's daily. But these are good for you!

Thanks for the insight, everyone :)

Hmmm...well I've never been in your situation~I am neither a model ~nor have I ever had to lose weight by a specific date (luckily):o ... I don't know why you aren't dropping pounds my only suggestions are mere guesses: First guess: sometimes when you start a fast at certain times in your cycle, your body may hold onto weight because it wants to be ready for pregnancy. Second guess-the added stress is keeping your body holding on to fat. Third guess-the added calories from more juice and coconut water is not helping at all.
My only suggestion would be to have green juices with only lemon juice added. Wouldn't be good long term maybe but since you are very healthy and very tuned into your body I'm sure you wouldn't do any damage.
Good luck!

I agree. I had problems losing weight with fruit juices. I am sticking to green juice and that has helped. I juice romaine, cucumber, an apple for sweetness with a lemon and some ginger. I am now addicted to it.

Try a sauna in your area. Athletes etc who need to be in a certain weight class use the sauna before weighing in for a competition.

Great suggestions! I decided that the pressure to drop the pounds is why I am doing the exact opposite... the stress must be stressing out my body. I have been taking Alissa's chlorella tablets and apple cider vinegar, and I have worked out these past 2 days. Going to cut out the fruit juices... I just bought dandelion greens, parsley and spinach.

I hope this works!

Maybe it's just regularly seeing all of the yummy food at Grezzo. Maybe just by seeing it, the calories are attaching themselves to you.

Just kidding! :)

I've never fasted on just lemon juice, but it definitely cleans me out when I drink it! What if you do light (i.e. very little bananas) green smoothies with chard, sometimes also drinking lemon juice?? That way your body is still getting fiber and pushing through what's already there too.

And for me, I have noticed that when I have a hard workout, I am a little more plump afterwards. No idea why. But long, light workouts don't do that. Maybe it's just me though!

How much longer do you have to do this??

Seriously, this is THE hardest fast ever because of my job... who in their right mind turns down free staff meals from Grezzo?! It's been a challenge not getting cranky from that! I am trying for 10 days, and today is day 7. So not too much longer to go. Fasting was sooo much easier when I worked at SAD restaurants bc the temptation wasn't there!

Soooo right about that.

The past 2 days I have not had to work... did a light work out, totally chilled out... lost weight. Got my answer, I suppose :)

NY,

I worry about you with your history of eating disorders. You posted a few months back that you only eat less than 1000 calories daily when you are eating.

Please just be careful. Modeling or having agencies that have unrealistic expectations, is not worth the detriment of your health.

I am a recovered bulimarexic (yes that is a term, i was both bulimic and anorexic), and I KNOW how easy it is to fall back on old habits or to put heavy expectations on ourselves.

Be healthy ok?

Not trying to scold, just trying to care.

Thank you so much. Every time I do a fast I force myself to honestly answer the question of "What is the motivation here?". Sometimes I like to "test" myself to see if I still have power and control over food. I really do love fasting... and ever since working at Grezzo I eat about 3 times the amount of calories (I get so inspired to go home and try new and wonderful recipes).

You are right though... we do need to always be careful. I do put heavy expectations on myself, but not enough to ever go back to that dreadful disease (I was "bullimarexic" too, though the medical diagnosis was "anorexia, binge-purge type). I have a new, healthy identity now. Thanks for checking in and keeping me grounded :)
