Just like Ezekial breads and wraps, which I have been eating and loving, thinking all the while I was 100% raw (they are cooked at 200 degrees for any of you who don't know), I am now wondering about the Larabar. Does anybody know:

~is the cocoa powder used toasted (usually "cocoa" means processed, as opposed to cacao, right?)
~are the nuts raw

the bar itself says "uncooked" on the package, but that could mean the bar itself is uncooked, not the ingredients!?!

I went to the website before posting and didn't find my answers....hmmmmmmmmmmmm........

That's a really great question! I was wondering the same thing, but because one bar said raw and a different flavor said 90% raw, I assumed the raw ones...are raw.
Anyone have a solid answer on this one?

The only thing I know for sure is that the lemon and key lime ones have pasteurized juices in them.

I would say if your transitioning and they help you.. and they are acceptable to YOU.. then go for it.

Personally, would take the time to make my own if I wanted a "bar" type snack

Unless I have put it in the bowl myself, cannot gaurentee its raw or the source of ingredients! Larabars and "NAKed" bars say "uncooked, raw"-- but arent!

Make your own, cheaper, more fun and far tastier/fresher!

From what I understand most of the regular flavors are 100% raw. Then there is the Jocolat branch of flavors, these all are chocolate based and are thus 90% raw. Hope this helps.

They don't quite "feel" 100% raw, if that makes any sense. Seems strange to have such a faraway or nonexistent expiration date.

I like to have a few around when I go on a long trip or some similar situation, but they don't make me feel good if I have them all the time. Could be the large quantity of "heavy" raw stuff like nuts and dates, though. My digestive system is fine with that stuff every once in a while, but it makes me sluggish to have too many nuts.

Thanks everyone! All very good points, and very helpful. I love how this community uses common sense to figure things out: of course if it has such a long expiry date/none at all it can't be raw!!! Making my own would be much better. I actually noticed myself feeling different after having one lately, which caused me to question them. I prefer the cocoa ones but have also been reading how controversial that is too lately (i.e. it has caffeine and is very processed). They really are a good transition food: heavy, chocolately, easy at the beginning when you have no idea what to eat, but I think it's my time to start transitioning these out......and the (gulp!) bread too : (

thanks again all!

Great point!!!

In general, I try to stay away from packaged/prepared "raw" foods... Personally I would rather have some steamed vegetables or cooked beans than eat a packaged, prepared, so called "raw food", THAT seems healthier to me:o I feel healthiest and best when I know my food is fresh, in its natural state, and what's gone into my food:cool: I always like to think... If I put my food in front of an indigenous tribe or a caveman, and they don't know what the heck it is for the life of them, than... what the heck am I eating it for?:p ;)

Before I went raw/in the first few months of my raw journey I could handle them just fine and liked them a lot. However, after having been raw for a longer period of time I didn't feel good when I ate them and they tasted...off. Personally, that was an indicator that I shouldn't be eating them :P

zigzag: LOL....great analogy and if you don't mind I am going to use it! Caveman visualizations here I come....

thanks Kaleidoscopeeyes: this is another great idea and so commonsensical! of course if they taste off don't eat them. victoria boutenko talks about how after many many years all she craved was salads, I think this is what naturally happens to us after we stop poisoning our bodies. and best of luck reaching your goal by your 16th birthday! i wish i had started this as young as you, i would have avoided soooo many health issues. congrats and i hope you keep at it : )
