So my 8yr old cocker has been amazingly healthy up until about a week ago, coughing, can't bark etc took him to the vet and after a very large bill was told that he has cardiomyopathy, we were told that he will not get better but will be comfortable after more testing and a couple of long term prescriptions.

I immediately went home and went on line! I found a herbal company for pets http://www.caninehearthealth.com/
They are in favor of raw so then I found a local raw dog food place and started Chester on raw this morning, as he is still eating just fine.

We are also going to begin him on the Canine Heart Health Package and pray that he starts to feel better soon!!!

So impressed that you searched for a way to help your dog! Unfortunately, most people would have just taken the vet's recommendation. My now 16 year old yorkie starting having health problems at a very early age. She was not getting better with conventional vet care. When I finally came to my senses, I took her to a holistic vet whose main recommendation was to change her diet to real food and stop vaccinating, using chemicals, etc. Her health completely turned around, and she is still going strong. She has been raw fed for about 10 years and is also on supportive supplements.

I am sure that you will see improvement with the raw diet and heart supplements!

My dog is raw -- on the BARF diet. He loves it, and his health has improved as a direct result. His long battle with fleas is over too. Thank goodness.

I hope your dog keeps getting better. :)

I give my 14 yo dog coconut oil - she loves to eat it and she appears to get an energy boost out of it! I've read there are health benefits for dogs (you can do internet searches on this)...and I don't see how it can hurt. There are some rules of thumb on dosage. First, I'd say use your own judgment...but what I've read is this.

The general recommendation is to begin slowly, adding liquid or solid coconut oil to the dog's food and gradually working up to about 1 teaspoon per 10 lbs. of body weight per day. An article in Whole Dog Journal suggests starting with 1/4 teaspoon per day for small dogs or puppies and 1 teaspoon per day for large dogs. They warn that even in healthy dogs, large amounts of coconut oil can cause diarrhea while the body adjusts.

I give my dog up to 1 tsp per day and she is about 40 lbs. No issues at all with digestion. She comes running when the jar gets pulled out of the pantry, no kidding! :)

I thought my dogs were the only ones who go CRAZY for coconut oil!! I even use it as my emergency call when all else fails - just yell coconut!! And, every time I open the jar to use it, my Newfie is at attention waiting for her spoonful, even if she is in a deep sleep!

My vet recommends it as well. I just give a big heaping spoonful to my big dog (close to 100 pounds) and a little bit to my 16 year old (only 6 pounds).

Fish oil is especially good for the heart. I pierce a capsule and squeeze on my little ones food.

I have a 12 year old golden retriever with joint problems. Otherwise he is healthy as horse and even survived cancer. I also have a 4 year old pug. He is healthy except for constant ear infections. I know this breed tends to have health problems, so I am prepared.

Should I be giving them both and coconut oil in their food? How will they benefit from these oils? I feed them dog food, so would it be okay to add these oils to their meals? I am very interested in all this, especially if it will result in lower vet bills!
