I'm finally buying a VitaMix!!!

I'm searching for comparisons but all I've found is comparisons of the 5000 to the 4500. Guess the 5200 is too new.

I think they both have variable speeds, but would like to confirm.

I know the 5200 has a different container. Other than that, I THINK the 5200 may be quieter(?) and more compact(?) to better fit under your counter(?)

Anyone know for sure?

Thanks!

I know most everyone has a VitaMix, but here's another thought for you. I bought a Blendtec and LOVE it. It actually has more HP than a VM and it has a computer front with buttons instead of the knobs that the VM has. I love the Whole Juice setting because I don't have to do anything but hit the button and it speeds up all on it's own while it's blending and stops when it's finished. All the settings do that.

So, just another option for you to research.

Oh, and check out this video where they put an iphone in the Blendtec to see if it wil blend. Wow!

I found what I needed and am copying here in case anyone else would like the information.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VITAMIX 5000 AND 5200

Q: What exactly is the difference between the Vita-Mix 5200 and the Vita-Mix 5000 machine?

A: A lot! First, the Vita-Mix 5200 has an all-new container that is made of an all-new material just developed this year by Eastman called Tritan™. Tritan is a copolyester, which is as strong and durable as polycarbonate, yet was formulated without BPA. The container also features improved sound damping during certain operations and improved chemical resistance with regards to cleaning compounds. There is also a new no-drip spout on the new container.

Complementing the new container are functional upgrades and exciting designer touches. The new easy-to-remove lid with “flaps” makes for smoother operation and a new twist-off lid plug means that it’s easier—and safer—to add ingredients for recipes like chunky soups. What’s great is that the plug (also made of Tritan) is conveniently marked with measurements. New design elements include an ergonomic comfort-grip handle that not only feels good, but looks good, too. The switches and dial have also been upgraded to a soft-touch look and feel and the label adds a touch of elegance to the classic Vita-Mix look.

At the heart of the Vita-Mix 5200 is a new and more efficient 2 peak horsepower motor. This motor has been custom-designed—just for Vita-Mix—to run substantially cooler when processing the heavier-than-normal mixtures such as peanut butter and ice cream, two favorite Vita-mix recipes.

Hi: we have a vitamix 5200. My understanding is that people were concerned about carcinogens leaching from the plastic in the old Vitamix because of the heat generated during the mixing. this is the new plastic that's certified carcinogen free.

and everyone who owns a vita-mix will be able to upgrade their containers very soon... for a minimal charge.

I also researched the blenders and ended up buying a Blendtek for the greater HP. I love it and have no regrets. Apparently 3HP will break open even small raspberry seeds where the nutrients are. I do have difficulty making almond butter though..do other make fresh nut butters in their blenders? The almonds are dry nuts. Perhaps I need to soak them first and maybe add some oil?? I don't want to do this if I don't have to.

Any blending advise would be welcome--I'm new to all of this!

I think the thing most drawing me to the 5200 is that (they say) it runs substantially cooler when processing heavier than normal mixes. And that the new container holds the sound down a little.

Haven't definitely decided. Will think about it over the weekend and try to order Monday.

I can hardly wait!

Thanks for all of your responses.

Yes, but the blade steel is very dangerous, too, and I read the opinion of a girl, which I have copied here below:

One of the things that has always concerned me about heating food in the blender like a Vitamix or a Blendtec is that you are destroying alot of the enzymes when you heat it that much… not to mention ( from someone who has sold over 3 million dollars in this kind of kitchenware) you are getting really hard on the motor, and sometimes things far more toxic than the plastic blender are leaching in thru the blender bottom. I have seen grease and grime come thru if you get the motors going too hot and too long. Obviously the best raw diet ( and I am so limited on my experience with raw foods but very experienced with the machines) I would think is low heat. Less agitation, right? Glass blenders that can take raw foods down to easy digest smooth have a real hard time handling the taxing work it takes. These blenders tend to use unbreakable plastic for a really big reason- because they are very powerful and the pressure going on inside the machine is ALOT of work. I have had people thru my past stores return blenders that they didn’t clean, mixers that looked like the person cooking had their eyes closed when they were washing. This gets to be a big concern to me. With so many altered foods and the need for sustainable nutrition I personally will continue to use my Blendtec or Vitamix ( I have both because I do trainings and such).... but I might also begin to recommend the Waring if I see it as a good option. I have not used one yet so I don’t give opinions on what I have never used.

What do you think?

I just bought the 5200 from Costco. If you get the opportunity make sure you get it from Costco. It is the lowest price. I used my last one for ten straight years and clearly hear and feel a difference in the new machine. The sound is not high pitch like old one and it does have a cool running motor. But with any motor you have to stop periodically otherwise anything being blended at that rate will heat up eventually.
I thought it was well worth the money and I travel with my old one. They actually make a travel case.

Love my 5200

Can't imagine it plus the base fitting on my counter under the upper cabinets though.

I have a small container too, but I don't use it as much.

Might need to start using it for the nuts and seeds

I just upgraded to the new container. The new "easy to remove lid" isn't, so if you get the new container, you might want to hold on to your old lid.
