Blech. Purchased some organic, raw tahini from WF and it is shockingly bitter... I have only had tahini by itself once before... It was a cooked version, and I remember it being alot sweeter and more palatable, more akin to a nut butter. PLease, please, for those of you who DO NOT like the bitter taste of tahini but still manage to consume it, SHARE HOW YOU DO!!!! Any good recipes/mixtures that will make it tastier? Cause I don't want to have wasted 7 dollars:/ Thank you!

Hey zig_zag! I personally LOVE raw tahini, but if you click on this - Gone Raw (http://goneraw.com/) and type in 'tahini' into the search bar, you'll get some recipes! Good luck!

I could never eat tahini by itself, but I like it in zuchini hummus! Check the banana search for a recipe, I know there are several here, don't waste it!! Good luck.

I am not a big fan of tahini either, but you might want to try Goddess Kale Chips. Everytime I make these, I stand over the D and end up eating most of them before they're even done. ~ Cathy

I am not a recipe type person.. so everytime i make something its different. So the other day i threw in a lemon, a banana, bit of olive oil, bit of garlic,..um..think that was the big mix, into the food processor with the tahini.Yum. It really was divine! Could neeeever have tahini on its own.hope that did not put you off for life.
Tahini's one of those foods that takes on a whole new meaning when blended with other things.personally i suggest playing with blends that include lemon(s), oil,and whatevers in the pantry ...
ENJOY!

Thank you all! Don't have a dehydrator as of yet (and personally, not sure if I'm fond of the idea of them), so cannot yet make any type of chips as suggested....
I did experiment a bit, and found that it is slightly more palatable when mixed with honey and spread over banana or carrots, but I suppose I may have turned to tahini for the wrong reasons- looking for a nut butter replacement.
I'll do a search, thanks all;) And... keep the suggestions coming, if there are any!:D

Hey Zig Zag,
Personally I think tahini's just too dry and pasty to stick onto foods, even moist ones. Best to literally blend or food processor it with something like the banana , honey, oil, etc. then the consistency is really good, really different, really creamy actually.

I think tahini is a bit of an acquired taste. I didn't always like it, but now I do. I believe there's a recipe in the RAWvolution book for Havalah that calls for tahini :)

I love Tahini, it's so versatile. When I need a really quick dessert fix, I mix up some Tahini with raw cocoa, agave, cashews and a little water and it takes care of my craving (former sugar addict). :p

If you use miso with tahini, it makes a great salad dressing (add liquid of course), especially with some fresh garlic or ginger.
But my favorite thing right now is a very ripe banana dipped in tahini or mashed with tahini. Sometimes I add ground flax to get a better omega ratio but it tastes best to me without...
Tahini is not the kind of thing you want to eat off the spoon at first (though now i could) but as said above it will grow on you...

Ok great, I'm getting some ways in which to sweeten tahini... Exactly what I needed:)

When my little one first switched from PB to tahini, we mixed it half & half....then less & less PB...then, mixed it with almond butter, & a little honey (now I'd use agave, & the blue agave is stronger, sweeter, more honey-like) so that helps lots to get used to the taste! Now she eats it straight from the jar (which is why we have 2 different jars going, most of the time! She double-dips!
Also, it's GREAT in celery, with agave drizzled over it, & raisins tucked in along the way!

I lived in Israel as a teen, so I learned how to make mine the middle eastern way.
Basically, one takes a couple spoons of it, adds lemon juice, salt, pepper, a garlic clove (squished) and then adds water slowly and a bit at a time and MIXES with a spoon until it is a creamy white (a FP would work better, but this is how I learned to make 'tahina salat'), when it is white and creamy you drizzle EVOO, parsley, and some red pepper or paprika over it and serve... amazing.
Eating it straight from the jar never even occurred to me. I guess it is coz I knew already that it wasnt palatable that way... lol
also, throw a spoonful of tahina into your VM when u make smoothies for instant 'sesame milk'. It is sooo high in calcium!!

If you sweeten tahina, you basically have HALVAH. Google it, it is a popular middle eastern sweet, like fudge.

A lot of the tahina in the store is not raw.
I live in the middle east, and most of the tahina is from cooked sesame seeds (roasted)......therefore it doesn't taste bitter.
I make tahina daily. I put sesame seeds in the blender and grind to a flour, add water, cumin, garlic, salt, and lemon or acv.
But if you aren't used to it, it can be bitter.
The milder one is usually cooked.

Hahaha, double dips? She sounds more controlled than I:p When I mixed it with honey I had quite a few spoon fulls:eek:
Interesting you bring up the ants on a log recipe, because straight from the onset I was anticipating making that recipe with tahini... Can I ask why you prefer agave to honey?

Hey, you mention it is so high in calcium, which is what I'd thought as well and which was a leading factor in why I bought it to begin with, but yet the jar only says 2% calcium per serving, which is measley! Any thoughtSs???!??

Add a little agave to it. I have to say that when I first tasted it, I also thought eeeek. Now, I really do like it, my tastes have changed as I eat more and more raw.

Omgawd, I luuuv tahini. I'll sometimes just eat it straight off the spoon. I've been on a tahini binge lately, putting it into and onto almost everything. I also enjoy it with banana, like someone else suggested. It's great mixed in salad dressings too. mmm-MM :)

Honey is too sweet for me, makes my teeth hurt (much as I LOVE the taste, especially straight off the honeycomb!) I love Agave's mild sweetness!
& I meant she double-dipped LOTS in one sitting! :D

I love raw tahini, I made a cheese sauce out of it and marinated my veggies, it was so good. It did have a weird taste but after I mixed it up, that weird taste was gone..

Thank you all again for your responses, opinions and suggestions!:D
I experimented again with the ingredients I have at home and found a wonderful way to mask the tahini bitterness! Oddly enough, if you add quite a bit of spirulina powder and a teeny bit of cinnamon it helps!!! Tastes delicious with spirulina.... on an apple or banana. I would like to add some agave, though, but don't have any at the time...
Nevertheless I think I have to stay away from this at the moment... makes me itchy and over-indulge waaaaay too much; my two problems with all nud/seed products:(
