Is unpasturized honey considered raw? I am out of the one I bought recently... which stated it was raw. It was a light tan colour... and I notice the one calling themselves unpasturized as regular "honey" colour. But the one that Alissa used in her vid was regular "honey" colour... so I'm kinda confused. I assumed raw meant it would be light tan colour. Anyone know?

the color of honey completely relies on the honey bees themselves and the plants they are around. I lived on kauai for a while and the raw honey around there was dark because the bees fed off the coffee plants... it was extremely rich. the bees travel up to five miles around the hives to collect so it just depends on the plants in that area for the kind of honey you're gonna get.

and there's numerous ways to explel honey without heating. it's actually quite easier to not heat it if you have the right system set up. most of the raw honey i've had is expelled from the comb using centripetal force. usually if you get local honey it's really interesting to call up the farmers or even go see their farms and ask them all about the process. everyone does it a bit different. it's always a good time, they love to talk about bees!!! :) :)

Thanks Nonipixie!! That's very helpfull... I totally didn't know the colour was dependant on the plants they fed off... very cool.

But if you're buying the honey from the store... do you know if unpasturized means raw?

Raw honey will say "Raw" on it. Honey is not vegan though.

i'm not totally sure about if it says unpasturized if it's completely raw or not. If i had to guess i'd agree with the above post who said that it would definitely say raw if it's raw. UNLESS it's really local and there's not even a professional label on there. there's usually always a phone number for the farm. or the managers probably know the person first hand. i'd just ask around. i personally like buying the unprossional looking jars that looked like they've been handled with a lot of love. :) :) :)

you know... I didn't know it at the time... but I was very lucky growing up. My dad was a bee keeper... and he'd harvest the honey and then store it in this huge black barrell in the basement. We had honey coming out our ying-yang lol!! Wish it was available now lol!! Nonipixie... you're right... it is handled with a lot of care and love!! He loved being a bee keeper.

i've been told that it's the pasturization which makes it not raw... so yes, it would be raw.

There's a farmers market outside my store once a month, so I get my honey straight from a bee keeper there. I don't really eat it though, very rarely, but honey is great for drawing infection and foreign bodies out of cuts/grazes :D
