I'm just full of questions today! :D

Anyway, my first attempt to sprout some seeds seems to be failing. I placed some Mung Beans in a jar, soaked them for the time you're suppose to and have been rinsing them twice a day. There is a screen over the jar. Some of the beans did sprout small tails, some didnt'. Since that there has been no more growth and they have been in the jar 5 days.

I'm sure they should be doing more then this. Leave it to me to have problems with something that is suppose to be simpel!

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks, Jodi

Jodi, after soaking them for the correct amount of days, do you drain them and make sure they are tilted, so the seeds get air and drain well? I prop my jars up with the screen on them, inside a bowl.

Other people hang the seeds in a nut milk bag.

Hope this helps.

I've had the BEST success sprouting by using a sprout bag! If you don't have one and don't want to wait on one ordered online, most hardware/home improvement-type stores carry whats called a paint straining bag. I got a pack of 2 at our local Lowe's for $1 and they work perfectly for sprouting and for straining nutmilk, etc.

Only thing, they don't have a drawstring to hang from...so I just kinda tore a hole in it up top on one side and I hang it up from there over my kitchen sink.

Actually, I started these beans in a sprouting bag. After 3 days when they really hadn't done anything, I transfered them to a jar. Is it possible to put too many beans in the bag? I don't remember how many I put.

Question: When you first soaked them before attempting to sprout, did any of them rise to the top of the jar/water? I don't know if it's true for beans, but from what I've heard is that when soaking grains in preparation for sprouting that if any rise to the top to skim them off because that means they're old or bad or something like that.

So, if that IS true for beans or anything else that we soak for sprouting, then perhaps that may have been a factor (??)

I'm not sure how much should be in the bag/jar, but I think I recall reading that they shouldn't be too crowded or something.

To be honest, I don't remember how many floated to the top. I know some did, and some didn't.

I think I'll dump them tonight and try sprouting the wheat berries I bought the other day. I was going to wait till my dehydrator came, but I'm a little anxious to master this sprouting thing.

Thanks!

They could be VERY old. That happened with old grains/beans when I stopped sprouting then "tried" to sprout again. Make sure you are using organic also.
