Hi, everyone,

I have a repetitive stress injury on both arms and squeezing the nut milk bag has flared up this condition.

I have also used a fine mesh strainer, but the end product is gritty.

I'm looking for other ways to make nut milk or another way to extract the milk from the bag without using the squeezing motion with my hands.

I would appreciate your ideas.

Thanks,
Linda

Hang the bag up on a cabinet knob or other hook that you have in your kitchen. It will drain slowly into your nutmilk container over about an hour or so.

I use a fine mesh strainer and I never have had any problem with grittiness. I also have used the nutmilk bags, but prefer the strainers because they are less work. What kind of nuts do you use and do you soak them first?
Soft nuts like pinenuts or macadamia nuts that have been soaked overnight make for less grittiness.

I have a hook where I hang the bag for initial draining, but there is still alot of milk in the bag that needs squeezing.

So far I have used soaked almonds and either unsoaked brazil or hazel nuts. I can't remember which. Since December, I have made almond milk many times and the other one once. The cumulative effect on my arms from the squeezing motion is getting unbearable.

Tell me more about the strainer method. Maybe my technique needs help. Here is what I did. After soaking the almonds and blending with water, I poured the mixture into the strainer and used a wooden spoon to help the milk pass through the almond meal. If I remember right, if I didn't help the milk pass through the almond milk, it wouldn't drain. It's been about a year or so since I have tried this method. At that time I gave up on making nut milk because of the grittiness until I finally broke down and purchased a nut milk bag in December.

Thanks for your help!!!

Hooray!!! I figured out how I can do it.

I'll put it through the strainer first, and then add another step and put the milk through the nut milk bag to remove the little bit of grit. No squeezing involved.

Yay :D I'm glad you've found something that works for you.

Frugal (or lazy) must be my middle name. Have not strained most of my nut milks. Just have used as it is out of the vitamix. Extra fiber for me I guess. Will have to make the effort and see if I prefer it strained.

Wow you have a nut bag strainer:eek:
Pffttt....I've been doing it the hard way all this time:rolleyes:
Though my hands never hurt from doing it my way.
1. - I soak the nuts over night.
2. - put in 2 cups of soaked nuts at a time into the blender.
3. - Than pour in some water about 3 cups of water.
4. - put the blender on high - chop/mix first - then to smoothie level - on high as well.
5. - repeat that process until all of the nuts have been blended to very fine particles.
6. - drain out the milk from the nut particles through several strainers.
7. - I have a really fine strainer that I use. I'll pour in some mush of nuts and milk and then use a spatula to push the nuts and milk through the tiny strain holes.
8. - once all the milk has been separated, I add some sweetener to the milk. And drink away. usually last 2 - 3 days in the fridge.
9. - then take the nuts and mix them with some bananas and dates and cinnamon and a some coconut meat and a sweetener - for a sweet snack later on. :D
