I wonder if it works on young coconuts? It says "green coconut" in the title. There is another auction for another opener that shows it being used on a green coconut...

post about it if you do cinnamon!
would love to know how they work...i really have a hard time...scared of the cleaver!
LOL
tired of waiting for DH to get home though!
if anyone tries it out, please let us know! I use the cleaver, too, although it's a fun stress reliever sometimes. http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii81/outsideanimage/coverlaugh.gif

I have been trying to open coconuts for the last 2 years to no avail. Finally, after reading the how to's and watching countless videos there was one that changed my life! It is by Jenna Norwood of Superchargeme.com and it is on youtube. I can open a coconut in about 30 seconds now!!!!! Amazing.

Have y'all tried the 4 or 5 hacks with a cleaver technique? That's how they do it at Thai restaurants here in LA. I got a nice, heavy cleaver for about 12 bucks at a thai grocery store in hollywood. Took me 4 or 5 coconuts to lose my timidity with it. I don't hold the coco with my left hand, cause my left hand is useful with all 5 fingers on it. It's very stable on the cutting board on its own.
This technique is very quick, and leaves a hole big enough to scoop out all the meat quickly and easily. Best and cleanest technique I've ever learned to get into my cocos.

I have one of these and use it all the time. I would hate to see you pay 19.99 for it though.... I bought mine at the brazilian version of the dollar store!
then to open it up to get the meat out, I use power tools (a skil saw, to be precise). Because a girl's got to have some fun!
oh my! power tools, hu? :p Definitely fun stuff.

I got one at my asian market for less than 5 bucks...don't do the ebay way! :)
I'd rather get another one and ship it to you personally :p

Are you using tool for the milk or opening up the coconut itself to get out the meat?
I use my Asian market $5.99 tool but still not very talented in using it quickly to suck out the milk. I sometimes still have to use a screw driver and hammer after I make the intial "hole." To open the whole coconut I will look at the advice shared here to get the meat out too. I have to have my husband using his heavy knife to open up the coconut after the milk taken out to get to the "coconut" meat which I freeze for later days (smoothie thoughts perhaps).

Anyone try growing their own trees that they sell on the site?

Nearly hacked off my fingers using a cleaver...
Found the To Life coconut opener (google it or I think its openacoconut.com (http://openacoconut.com)) and it seems to work really well. Nothing fancy, just makes a little hole for drinking out of a young coconut.
Anyone know of a way to get to the coconut meat without a cleaver though? This one is good for drinking, but when I make this one dessert I like to use the coconut meat.

I don't know of any way to get the meat out of a YTCoconut without using a knife/cleaver. Here's a link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THEdI_gSNQ4)to how I open mine - usually just 1 whack with the cleaver. *Ü*

And that is how I ended up nearly cutting off my fingers! Thanks for the post, I gotta keep searching.

What we need is a coconut splitter - like a log splitter! (Where would we store it though....) wink! Hope you find a method that works for you! *Ü*

actually all that is needed is something to hold the coconut firm - a large vise on a tool-bench - and an oyster knife.
Obviously you'd need to expose the shell first but that seems the easy bit.
Then place coconut in vise, hold oyster knife at correct angle and hit handle with mallet to flip open the lid!
I wish I could get these coconuts here in the UK. Probably can in London but I'm not driving all the way up there - there's always Slough I suppose.
This was just posted today on YT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRL79AXCiIY&feature=feedu). No way to cut off fingers using this method - and it's being demonstrated by a woman (Dara). :)

Wow! I'm impressed! She makes it look so easy!! I don't know if any of my knives are sharp enough though. But I'm gonna give it a try!:excited::excited::excited::

lol you don't need anything other than a screwdriver to open a coconut :) Poke out the eyes, drink the juice, then let the shell dry outside for a day or two and then crack it with a hammer :or slice it with a sharp knife along the eye area that was poked out previously. I know most people bake the coconut to dry it quickly but to keep it raw you can just cure it outside.
