what do you do to motivate yourself to run despite this freaking weather? i like to run in the mornings, but gosh it's cold & grey.
My dog - he drives me nuts if we don't get a good run. Plus, being a dog, he does need to walk at least once a day and I'll always jog since I'm out there anyway. Otherwise, whenever we don't get out, I always feel like crap and really restless and I inevitably regret not jogging. Those factors all together really motivate me.

I have to have my music with me. I just don't get as great of a run unless I am packing tunes. And I always run during the day. It's too dangerous at night. I say dangerous because about 5 months ago I busted my ankle on some unknown object at 9 pm. It totally sucked.

-Meet up with a group. That way you have someone to call you when you want to blow off running. *This is my favorite*
-Keep a log to track how much you have run and what you have accomplished.
-Change your course. New scenery is always refreshing.
-If you are competitive (or wish to become) remember your opponent isn't laying in bed..they are out running!
-Give yourself a goal race - sign up for a local 5K run
-Invest in good gear. Great shoes, Yax Trax, jacket, hat, gloves, Under Armor cold gear is the BEST! This stuff is expensive, but will last a long time!
-Music. I tunes has some free podcasts that you can download. one of them has intervals built in.
-chocolate. Need I say more? Didn;t think so.
trust me. I have used every excuse in the book, including the ice storm we are still skating around from. I *wish* I had a treadmill, but we just can't swing that with our house and our funds.

what kind of music gets you running? Names of group, singers and style would help.

Ooooh! Some of those are GREAT to run to!
I have to use my treadmill in the winter, it's just too cold and slippery (ice & no sidewalks in my town is a bad mixture!) for me. I'm miserable and can't wait to get back on the pavement!

Just the one song with an asterik has a bad word in it. ther rest is just mostly electronica, alternative or rock and roll. I think you can preview most of these on itunes. Some are from my personal collection. :D

I agree with lambe-winter is nasty here too and I WANT TO GET OUT ON THE ROAD AGAIN-esp. since I am officially signed up for Ottawa....as far as getting motivated to actually take that first step, I just read my sig. line and imagine how many people are still in bed---AFTER my run!!!! get up and get going...the first 5 minutes are the worst then I wake up!!!! It's 15 degrees now (was 13 when I got up.....hmmmm, TM or outside?????).....TBC
music-I like classic rock + a little r&b to get me going.....

Holy crotchcicles! I had the coldest yet sweatiest bad runs this a.m. This is me AFTER with MANYMANY layers....I am under all that.....which amounted to an extra 10 pounds by the way! I am ready for a marathon any day after that fiasco! I made my daughter take my picture so I could remember that doing this run = at least one marathon! I was wiped out!

Never ran in the snow but I am sure it is very hard. Good luck on your marathon run.

Maybe you should join us in our little cyber gym here on RFT....We always try to keep each other motivated and everyone is into all different types of exercise! I personally am a runner too and I've been in the "slump" many times. Usually when I "allow" myself to walk that first mile it's enough to psych me up to keep on going! Also, didn't see where you live, but the weather has been a major DOWNER (storm after storm) around here and inside training loses it's momentum/fizzle after awhile! Good luck. Maybe the thread we start each month will re-motivate you!!!!;)
