hey there.

prior to going raw i had 2 small meals a day & didnt snack much, if at all. since going raw, i find that i'm ALWAYS snacking. albeit, it's on fruits, it's on the hour sometimes. & it's not like i'm not filling up on meals; i have two 12 oz. green smoothies a day, & for dinner i make myself a leafy salad. also: i'm addicted to almond butter & im constantly dipping my fruit-snacks in it. this is not good, as one of the main reasons i went raw is to tone my body.

any advice, insight in the way of this?

also: i've just recently transitioned into a raw diet. maybe it's a passing thing?

goodnight moon.

you are not eating nearly enough.....

at least from what you've just described, your body needs more, not less.

Hey lambe. I see we have another philly person in tha house! Welcome.

I can tell you briefly from my own experience going raw, that in the beginning I just started eating more raw and didn't worry about the other 'stuff'. It's definitely a passing thing. I was eating tons of dehydrated foods and heavy nut based dishes. I just kept eating because I didn't feel full. Even though I was transitioning from a vegan diet, I felt I was still nutrient deprived and by eating so much it was my bodies way of nourishing itself. I still lost weight and experienced all of the benefits. Over time I ate less of the nut dishes and started to get into eating different greens, green smoothies, sprouting, etc. It was just a natural progression for me. Now, I'm three yrs. in and it's second nature to me. My diet is always changing from day to day season to season. For me the longer I'am raw, the more simple I eat. My advice to you would be to enjoy your experience and try not to have too many restrictions. What I love about Alissa's approach is that it's about eating raw and seeing the results. My experience is that eventually you'll tune into what your body needs.

To answer your question about the toning up part. I found that taking up an activity whether it be yoga, bike riding, pilates, etc. (for me it's capoeira, which is sooo much fun) was the answer to this. I've never felt better in my whole life! Best wishes to you on your journey.

really? i mean, i know it's only fruits & almond butter (the "only" part doesnt apply to the almond butter--oh my my), but i think 8 different snack times a day is a little excessive. i feel full for about an hour & a half & then im at it again.

also, combined with the green smoothies i make which are ridiculously hearty (2.5 bananas per smoothie, whole apple, peeled orange, 2 handfuls of spinach), i feel as though there is potential for death-by-fruit.

I'm only like that when I first go on raw. It goes away for me.

I have on and off trouble with this as I adjust to being raw, and I can totally relate, especially with the fats/nuts thing. It's like your body is never satisfied! I've come to three conclusions:

1) we subconsciously are still sometimes looking for that cooked-food FULL feeling that we all grew up on, that we do not get with raw foods, so we keep eating until we run out of food!

2) Like you, I live in a polluted , dirty city. To fend off these harmful intoxicants that are around us every day, our bodies desire fat to create a sort of shield...David Wolfe talks about this in his Sunfood Success System book. It is not normal for a raw body to be living in a big city, it does not scientifically make sense, you know? He explains that people especially living in cities tend to overeat and always snack as a way of ensuring their body is receiving extra extra nutrients.

3) As our bodies move through raw transitions, we are consistently in an "out with the bad, in with the new" mode. The more we unexplainably snack, the more stuff we move through our system and nourish our bodies with good things. I think that as long as we are not snacking on cooked foods and not overdosing on sugar ( we have to be careful of creating diabetes-like effects), we can trust that the snacking is somehow biologically justified.

I do have to say, though, I wish that snacking on whole foods was not so expensive! Produce can be so freaking expensive in the city!!!

I've been eating raw for 2 years now... And I still feel like I eat ALL THE TIME.... :D

I too have the "dip everything in almond butter" syndrome... I sometimes won't buy apples because I love the best with almond butter.... I'm talking yesterday I had three apples and probably 4 tbsp of almond butter.... Today I stopped in Whole Foods... and what, my friend in produce pointed out the great deal on apples... I bought three... ate one on my way out... and two at lunch with MORE almond butter... and a YUMMY HUGE salad....

My clothes fit the same... My weight is up a few pounds, but I contribute that to having and feeding a boyfriend AND training for a 10k... muscle weighs more than fat.....

Enjoy I guess... I am dreaming of more almond butter right now.....

Aloha and Welcome to RFT....!!! So glad you have joined us! No worries about eating all the time... you are eating healthy foods and by looking at your food content - you're really not overeating!!

I find that (for me) my body seems to process the nutrients so much faster because it can use it all... and then it needs more -- :D . But it does go in waves - sometimes I can't get enough and I feel like I'm eating all the time ... then - it just stops and I'm full and really don't want to eat!

so .... really -- don't worry about it - just listen to your body - don't stress over what you're eating and just enjoy this amazing LIFEstyle!

rawk on and enjoy the ride!!

lambe, I can totally relate too. I am nearly 6 weeks raw. My first three were 100% raw with a strict detox diet and juice fasting. Now, I am 80-90% raw. I orginally lost 13 pounds after the three weeks and my clothes were super loose. I feel like I've gained half of that back now. But I constantly snack too and I'm going for the sweet stuff, such as dried fruit, and making raw chocolate once per day with raw cacao, coconut butter, agave nectar, and almond butter. Woops, maybe shouldn't give you another use for almond butter. :-) But it's soooo good! My fave snack is Ants on a Log (celery, almond butter and raisins.)

These extras are on top of full meals that I make. I love preparing raw food, so my meals have been wonderful. I'm thinking about getting a book on overeating or emotional eating. I think it may go deeper for me than just transitioning to raw.

Yeah, I bet it's a transition thing. ;) Also, realize how many less calories there are in raw foods. Those fruits go right through. I know, my kids eat raw all day & they can just eat non-stop. The almond butter probably makes it more filling and it doesn't get digested quite as fast. I say go with it & see where it leads you. There's plenty of time for toning!

Oh, and welcome to the group! It's great to meet ya!!:D
