I haven't made one, but I remember seeing the instructions for making one at this link...

I had a go but my H said it looked like a death trap and he wouldn't want it on in the house if we weren't there, which sort of defeated the object!

I ended up buying one.

Not a dehydrator but my husband keeps saying he wants to build a juicer that can juice a 5 lb. bag of carrots at a time! LOL!

I'm the type to build my own things sometimes, but I don't think it's worth building your own dehydrator, you'll never get the efficiency of a profesionnaly mande one, and I mean space usage efficiency, even dehydrating effeciency, and power effeciency.

The 9 try can be had for under $200, I paid $160 for my 9 tray, but it was supposedly "blemished" (never saw any blemish) which is why I got a good rebate.

On Good Eats, he made beef jerky by purchasing 3 or 4 of those cheap paper air filters.....and cutting up the food...and laying it in the slats....and bungee-ing the whole works to a cheap box fan.....and air-drying for 24-48 hours. No heat and no mess. Haven't tried it myself yet.
