A few examples from "Doctrine of Signatures"

A sliced Carrot looks like the human eye. The pupil, iris and radiating lines look just like the human eye, and science shows that carrots greatly enhance blood flow to and function of the eyes.

A Tomato has four chambers and is red. The heart is red and has four chambers. All of the research shows tomatoes are indeed pure heart and blood food.

Grapes hang in a cluster that has the shape of the heart. Each grape looks like a blood cell and all of the research today shows that grapes are also profound heart and blood vitalizing food.

A Walnut looks like a little brain, a left and right hemisphere, upper cerebrums and lower cerebellums. Even the wrinkles or folds are on the nut just like the neo-cortex. We now know that walnuts help develop over 3 dozen neuron-transmitters for brain function.

Kidney Beans actually heal and help maintain kidney function and yes, they look exactly like the human kidneys.

Celery, Bok Choy, Rhubarb and more look just like bones. These foods specifically target bone strength. Bones are 23% sodium and these foods are 23% sodium. If you don't have enough sodium in your diet the body pulls it from the bones, making them weak. These foods replenish the skeletal needs of the body.

Eggplant, Avocadoes and Pears target the health and function of the womb and cervix of the female - they look just like these organs. Today's research shows that when a woman eats 1 avocado a week, it balances hormones, sheds unwanted birth weight and prevents cervical cancers. And how profound is this? .... It takes exactly 9 months to grow an avocado from blossom to ripened fruit. There are over 14,000 photolytic chemical constituents of nutrition in each one of these foods (modern science has only studied and named about 141 of them).

Figs are full of seeds and hang in twos when they grow. Figs increase the motility of male sperm and increase the numbers of sperm as well to overcome male sterility.

Sweet Potatoes look like the pancreas and actually balance the glycemic index of diabetics.

Olives assist the health and function of the ovaries.

Grapefruits, Oranges, and other citrus fruits look just like the mammary glands of the female and actually assist the health of the breasts and the movement of lymph in and out of the breasts.

Onions look like body cells. Today's research shows that onions help clear waste materials from all of the body cells They even produce tears which wash the epithelial layers of the eyes.

i've seen that before, and it never fails to stun me with the truth of it. i've read that a very high percentage of the plants that grow in the world would either make you very sick if you ate them, or kill you outright. and there are some theories about how humans figured out which was which, the edible vs. the inedible. one theory says we "tested" each and every one, eating a little bit of it and noticing the effects (or noticing the effects on our unfortunate tribe mates who keeled over dead after a meal of the wrong foods). another theory is that traditional ethnobotonists -- the shamans and curanderas and quimbandas and sangomas -- were able to read either the plant's physical characteristics (much like wild animals can) or its energetic characteristics. the second theory holds more water, as traditional peoples who are uprooted (like african slaves) can instantly go wildcrafting and seem to know without "testing" the unfamiliar plants in their new surroundings, not only what things are okay to eat, but which ones hold medicinal properties and for what ailments they might treat.

fascinating stuff!

Here where I live we eat a root vegetable called "cassava" raw (or cooked) and our history tells us that it's poisonous in its raw state, plus the juice from it is extremely poisonous (Arawak and Caribs used it to poison the tips of arrows). But go figure, people have been eating it for years and years and none have reportedly died.

The doctrine of signatures is widely used is several fields. In herbalism, flower essence therapy and homeopathy it is a large part of the science. There are some wonderful books on the subject. IT is used a bit differently than the article attached implies, but it is still extremely useful and effective.

Can you recommend any titles? This is fascinating.

any of the classical works will talk about it. Insights into Plants does quite a bit, Matthew Wood's BRILLIANT book, The Book Of Herbal Wisdom goes into it, The Healing Power of Flowers by Rhonda Pallas Downey, Bach Flower Therapy: Form and Function by Julian Barnard

oh, and this is kind of neat....for those interested I am a flower essence practitioner. One of the ways that I choose and essence is by using the doctrine. Often times I will have a session and write down my selections in the chart. I will then have the client choose which flowers they are most drawn to. I am still shocked at how often they choose the flowers I have written. So the idea here is that the ones you are most drawn to have something to offer you:

if you click below the picture you will get a brief blurb as to the positive and negative aspects of each. Now, this is an in depth field so there is much more to it than what you are seeing, but it does give you an idea. I have worked with doctors, naturopaths, psychiatrists and psychologists as clients and they have all been astounded at how powerful the modality is, but also at how amazing the doctrine's are. I also send blends out almost daily and get great feedback from people who just choose their own and forgo the session-so really intuition is key here. Have fun playing!
