View Full Version : Raw indian naan bread with dipping sauce?

One thing I miss is indian naan bread dipped in the indian sauces, I used to love that. Is there a raw version? I do have indian flat bread recipes but they seem a bit strange, I think I'd be better off modifying a regular raw bread recipe (like Ani's black sesame sunflower bread, that one's quite good).

Then there's the sauce, does anyone have recipes for thick indian sauces similar to the real thing?

Thanks

if you mean chutneys, i usually do something like this:

-mango (other juicy fruits work well too)
-mint/cilantro or both
-onion and garlic
-mustard powder
-cayenne
-agave

don't know about savory indian sauces though. i made a curry with tomatoes and young coconut and lots of spices that was ok... you might be able to improvise something?

no idea about the bread. let us know if you have luck with anything.

I was looking more for one of the sauces that indian chicken/meat is normally served in... let me see if I remember the strange names...
-Korma (was one of my favorites)
-Tikka Masala
-Butter chicken
-Chicken curry

I used to love the naan bread dipped in these sauces and would love a raw alternative.

Yeah its easy to make that kind of sauce using soaked cashews or avo. I make raw curries with a creamy curry base and diced veggies it.
I normally make something along the lines of:
Soaked cashews
coconut oil
Carrot
Cumin, coriander, turmeric, ginger, that kind of thing
garlic
onion
Lime juice
sea salt
and just mess around with it and blend it up. I'm sure a sauce using coconut meat as the base would be great too.

Oh yeah, and I think you probably could make Ani's bread but process the mix smooth, and stir in some onion seeds. Maybe brush it with oil while it's dehydrating.

Thanks! That sounds great! About onion seeds, do you mean the same used to make onion sprouts? I have some of those.

subbaculcha: As per your suggestions I made an indian sauce based on avocado (didn't want to wait for cashews to soak) with coconut oil and indian spices (curry powder, ginger, turmeric [enough for it to turn from green to yellow], coriander, cumin, garam masala) and a few cherry tomatoes. I had to add a bit of water as it was too thick.

I also made anies bread with the sunflower seeds also ground but I did leave the unground flaxseeds and think I shouldn't have (I'm chewing on it as I type). I think it would be great to powder all the ingredients and perhaps either skip the sesame seeds or replace them with a smaller amount of onion seeds. I think I may try making it even flatter also.

All I'd be missing would be some "chicken" peices to put in the sauce like the real thing, but honestly, it was really the bread and sauce I liked.

Thanks soo much for getting me so close to a perfect raw version of this, I think with a bit of tweaking the sauce and bread it could be even better than the real thing!

Hey Raweater, if you do perfect the recipe, you would share it right?
Suddenly I'm missing curry!

I think he is talking about Ani Phylo's black sesame seed bread. She has a cookbook Ani's Raw Food Kitchen. It is one of my favorites, though I have yet to make the bread Raweater made. http://www.amazon.com/Anis-Raw-Food-Kitchen-Delectable/dp/1600940005

is the bread black because of the black sesame seeds and what is onion seed?? I can't believe there is a substitute for naan but would try it to see - love naan and dipping it.

What do you mean what are onion seeds lol? They are the seeds of the onion plant. I bought some for growing onion sprouts.

I've never seen them. Where would you buy them? I mean duh - what is an onion seed but you know - this is not something you pick up at the grocery store right??

And - is the naan bread black from using black sesame seeds which I have never used before either??

I think I had gotten them from sproutpeople.com

The black sesame seeds in the bread are left whole and are only a small part of the recipe so the bread is "dotted" with black sesame seeds. It's also not soft like naan bread.

To be honest I have been eating at an indian restaurant every few weeks since a few months, I get chana masala (chickpea curry), saag aloo (spinach curry) and roti bread (a vegan version of the naan bread). I also ask them to make it all dairy free.

Re: Chicken Tikka Masala

There is a nice blog here with the recipe:
http://darkredcrema.com/

Apparently she got it from Allrecipes.com. Some have posted what they did to change the recipe under user reviews.

I don't know if I am allowed to post those links.... but you can alter those recipes to your taste and omit the things you prefer not to eat.

i usually use mushrooms when i want a meaty texture, you could add this to your raw sauce. raw curry is really yum!
