I've used the banana and tried several cereal recipes using buckwheat. Not sure what I'm doing, but they don't turn out well. The sprouted buckwheat tastes to too green. I don't want to eat green tasting crunchies with my sweet nut milk! I'm trying to satisfy my kids cravings for their Special K/Corn flakes...any recipes would be helpful. (I've also tried a grawnola recipe that just has nuts...I thought it was good, but it didn't go over well with the kids).

I buy kamut or barley flakes from my hfs and just soak them in nut milk, add fresh fruit and nuts and the kids love this alternative to cooked oatmeal. Is there anyway to know if these flakes are truly raw? I asked at the store and the reply was, "they look raw to me!"

I do a "cereal" where I merely cut up a crisp apple, a sprinkling of raisins, cinnamon, and soaked nuts and/or seeds. Somewhat crunchy and very good with almond milk.

This is what I've been LOVING lately.....chop and apple, slice a banana, throw in some walnuts (you could use soaked dehy. almonds, chopped) spinkle some cinnamon....NOW, I drizzle this with oil, nut. yeast and alittle salt, but YOU could pour on the nutmilk....crunchy, sweet, and definitely not the green taste!! ENJOY!

I don't think the flakes in the store are raw. What you could do, however, is buy the grain, sprout it for a day or so, dehydrate and crush up. You can buy machines that make flakes for you. Have you tried RFRW buckwheat crispies? You don't sprout the buckwheat, just soak it. If you do have RFRW you could try the granola too. I made the granola and put it in one of our cereal boxes, and my dad ate some not realising it was raw and started asking what the new granola was because he liked it :)

It's important to understand grains are very unhealthy, raw or not. I think raw is the least of your concerns with grains, as the grain itself is far more health damaging than cooking it (which just makes it even worst).

I used to like those cereals that were in sort of clusters with almonds, oats, honey, etc. I'm sure a raw grain free version could be easily made.
I'd use almonds, agave or honey, flax seeds, hemp seeds, any other ideas?
I've actually never had raw cereal though, as I hate making nut milk and would never start making nut milk every day. I've heard of people keeping nut milk for 4-5 days, but I've read and experienced it go bad in 24-48 hours.

So, if buckwheat is botanically a fruit, is it excluded from the grain category all together?

I know buckwheat isn't technically a grain, but it still has similar problems (high sugar, spikes sugar levels) at least there's no gluten so it's not as bad, but I prefer to avoid buckwheat also, but do have some in my pizza crusts, however I've recently got a few grain and buckwheat free pizza crusts I'll try.

I don't have RFRW...it's on my list of books to buy. Is is okay to post the recipes here or is there somewhere else online I could get the recipes for the buckwheat crispies and granola?

I just fill a small bowl with a variety of nuts, dried coconut, sliced banana and cover it all with some almond mylk and I'm a happy camper.

Raweater, you can't just go saying something as broad as "grains are unhealthy" without a. giving more info and b. stating that that's really just your opinion. I'm quite sure with a quick google search I could find lots of info on how good sprouted grains are. Personally, I think buckwheat rocks, and it's not at all a grain, but a seed. But I'm not gonna go around saying that buckwheat is great to eat because that's just my opinion, not fact.

I took Beckx's advice and looked on Amazon. I have the recipe for the RFRW buckwheat crispies, just two more questions:
I've been buying hulled buckwheat (it looks white) is this the same as buckwheat groats??
Also, this recipe calls for maple syrup...can you get raw maple syrup, I thought I heard all maple syrup was heated?
Thanks!

I use agave, and it's JUST as delicious :)

I make a granola with soaked almonds, sunflower seeds and pumpkins seeds. Put them in the processor to chop into smaller pieces. Mix by hand with 2 chopped apples and a mix of 6 dates made into a juice with 1/2 cup of water. Add cinnamon, nutmeg and salt to taste and drop lumps of it onto a teflon sheet to dehydrate for 12 hours or until crispy. I sometimes add some raw chocolate nibs. Makes a wonderful crunchy cereal with almond or cashew milk.

One hard part of going raw is missing the familiarity of foods. This hits the spot with the traditional cereal. OMG, this is fabulous. I added some agave and vanilla in the nutmilk. Thanks for sharing.

I don't know if this is what is meant by "buckwheat crispies" but I soak my buckwheat, then dehydrate it until very dry and crispy. Then I put it in a big bowl and add some honey, olive oil, coconut, a little vanilla, salt, some nuts/seeds and whatever else I feel like adding, stir and then dehydrate it some more until it is still sticky and clumps together but not wet. I LOVE this granola and so do the others I've shared it with so far. I want to experiment with different flavor combinations when I get the chance.

I've made raw granola before, that my daughter really liked. Just fill your bowl with "stuff" such as chopped soaked nuts, coconut, currants, buckwheat etc , whatever you want, add some spice such as cinnamon to taste, then stire in about 1 tablespoon of honey or agave per cup of "stuff." Spread on teflex sheets and dehydrate to desired crispiness. It took a couple of days to get this crispy, but I thought it was good when it was a little soft yet. I would store this in an airtight container in the fridge.

You know I am the first one not to give up my cereal. It was hard becoming vegan oh so many years ago before Silk. Anyway, when I went raw this summer that was the first thing I set about doing was making cereal. Then I discovered green smoothies. Now I have no cravings for cereal. I make buckwheat cereal of all kinds of concoctions and DD eats them for quick breakfasts or when we go out and lots of fluids is not ideal with a toddler who likes to hold it until the last minute. :-)
There is life beyond cereal. Who knew?

I have not read all of the replies so this may have been suggested already.
I sprout Quinoa and then dry it in the dehydrator and use it as the basis of cereal.
It is nice with chopped banana and gogi berries.

Okay, we need someone adventurous to experiment with the "corn chip" recipes and create a "corn flake" recipe. Come on people, it shouldn't be that hard...:p

I'd do it yesterday if I had a dehydrator.
