Or do raw crackers really not taste the same, even when they're really similar.
I made the just like ritz recipe and while it was good, I was happy that it came out crunchy, it just didn't do it for me, I'm going to try a corn chip recipe now, but will I ever be satisfied with dehydrated foods?

I'm just beginning to try dehydrator foods and so far my husband hasn't really cared for anything I made and I thought the things were OK but like you said didn't really excite me. I made Rawritos and had hope for something crunchier and I made thumbprint cookies and didn't care for something in the taste, not sure what it was though. My kids actually were receptive to both and liked them both. I want to try corn chips but not sure what recipe to try. I hope I find something we really like. I'd like to try some other granola bars, cookies, or crackers. Good luck to you.

No, it is definitely NOT just you. One of my excuses for not being able to stay raw was that I didn't have a dehydrator. So, for Christmas someone got me one. Well, I've tried several things and didn't like any of them! I'm trying the corn chips next, the recipe from Alissa's book. Let us know how yours turn out.

I totally agree with you. They are good - I tried the ritz and the cheez-its. They were OK but just not the same. I haven't made them again. I do make the rawritos and the corn chips regularly. But even they are not "quite" right. I know if there are corn chips in the house and I have rawritos, I still sometimes grab a handful of "real" corn chips.

I believe that they put so much crap in processed foods that it has ruined our taste buds for what is real. We need to just persevere and keep making the raw substitutes and hopefully our taste buds will become reconditioned.

I believe it will happen.

For me, when I try new recipes I have to tell myself NOT to expect it to taste like anything I have already tasted. I try my best to appreciate the new foods with no expectations.

I haven't tried one raw food that is labeled as "taste like..." that actually taste like the dish it is trying to imitate.

so far I have loved the kale chips and the eggplant recipe I got from gabriel cousens book
which is basically eggplant soaked in salt water then tossed evoo and with italian spices then dried...really yummy for that pizza topping type of taste that can be great in a spinach salad

(slice that eggplant veeerrry thin)

the flax cracker thing can be good but i get kind of grossed out at how they make me feel. too heavy and too dry

for the sweet stuff i say skip the dehydrator. try the freezer for setting

Keep trying. My best efforts at dehydrating are those that I adapt to my tastes. For instance: Leaving out the flax seed and adding turmeric on the cheez-its. Adding cumin and chili powder to a tortilla recipe and then drying the leftovers until they were chips. Reducing the nama shoyu in the onion bread.

Make adjustments, experiment. Have fun with it. And if you haven't tried kale chips, yet....get busy with it. :)

BTW:rawererin, that was your cheez-it recipe, soooo THANK YOU!

I've been raw for over a year with no dehydrated food. If you stop trying to imitate what you are giving up, you quickly forget about it and lose your desire for it. I can't even conceive of choosing a shrivelled up, bland, lifeless tortilla chip over a bowl of ripe raw heirloom tomatoes.
Happy travels.

I think that's the key for me as well.

I don't have my dehydrator yet (my old one gave up the ghost long before I actually decided to go raw!) but there are no expectations. It's just more variety, I can have a 'sandwich' or 'burger' but it'll all be raw and another chance to mix things up a little. I get bored with the same ol' stuff, day in, day out! Of course I don't expect that 'burger' to taste like the real thing either! LOL!

Brownies and Rawstrength, I think you're right, actually I know you're right. For me, it's almost like I'm holding on to that final piece of SAD food. But, when it doesn't taste the same I feel let down and frustrated. I'm going to give the dehydrator a rest for a litte while, at least until I am further along with RAW.

A lesson has been learned...

Thanks!

i totally agree with you rawstrength.
actually, it wasn't until i stopped trying to imitate SAD foods that i finally began to really enjoy eating raw. now, i get way more pleasure out of eating whole, juicy fruits than i ever thought possible. once i dropped the spices and the heavy stuff my life turned around :)
you can definitely be raw WITHOUT a dehydrator. it is possible!
