Hi gang, I was talking with the 'rents tonight and this diagnosis came up for my dad. I am so new to raw/living foods I was wondeering what out there is good for treating altzheimers and parkinsons. Apparently, Lewy is a combination of both! Talk about a double whammy....on top of it all, my father can't have too much iron, is there any foods out there that will help clean it out? (Note: the liver cleanse is NOT an option. He would never go for that!)

TIA:confused:

excerpt from: http://www.life-enthusiast.com/index/Education/Cleansing/Rice_Bran_Cleanse

"IP6 is inositol hexaphosphate (also called phytic acid), which is found in every cell of the human body, is one molecule of inositol and six of phosphate. IP6 is known as nature's master mineral chelator (remover).

Foods high in phytic acid include the bran of whole grains, beans, seeds, nuts, and soy isolates.

Neuromelanin is a brain pigment that controls iron which may be overwhelmed with advancing age. Loose iron is involved in the onset and progression of brain diseases such as Alzheimers, Parkinsons, Huntingtons disease and Frederichs ataxia. [Ann N Y Academy Sciences1012:306-25, 2004] Metal removal (chelation) is proposed as a treatment for Alzheimers disease by its ability to dissolve beta amyloid plaques in the brain. [Journal Alzheimers Disease 6:291-301, 2004]

A preliminary study using an iron chelator among Alzheimers patients produced some encouraging results, but concerns over the side effects of chelating drugs have limited further research. [Lancet Neurology 3: 431-34, 2004] However, naturally extracted IP6 (from whole grains) has been found to be non-toxic in comparison with pharmaceutical chelators. [Environmental Molecular Mutagenesis 38:347-56, 2001]

As a dietary supplement, IP6 is documented as a cleanser of arteries, the heart, brain, kidneys, liver, gall bladder (stones), and many other tissues."

There's a lot more information there. I found this article really interesting. You could check with the manufacturer to see if their rice bran extract is raw. But you should also note: too much IP6 in the diet causes zinc deficiencies (as the IP6 chelates zinc as well as iron, as well as calcium!)

Good luck! I thought the buhler thing was hilarious btw...

Thanks for that post.
I ahve been doing some research last night and this morning. We have to get him into the doctor for some blood tests to see where the iron is. From what I have been reading, the high iron can cause a lot of the Lewy Body Dimentia symptoms.

Thanks again, and if anyone has any other info or advice I would greatly appreciate it.

Hey there, Wheatgrass will pull heavy metals out of the body. Alzheimers patients, I've heard, have high aluminum. Stop using aluminum foil too. No one should be using it. especially to cook with. Good luck.:)
