I have always heard that coconuts with a purple/violet tinge are bad and should be thrown out. Lately though, every coconut I open has this colour - as well as a very small amount of "meat". This is bad as I am wanting to make coconut noodles, and there is no way there would be enough. BUT I noticed on the garden diet website (Storm/Jinjee) that pics of their coconuts are exactly this colour. SO Have I been hearing wrong all this time and purple colour = ok????

I live in Washington state and every one of the coconuts I am getting has this color and very littel meat. It may just be the time of year, but I am ready for my usual coconuts to return.

I have "heard" that the purplish/pinkish ones are very young, which is why there is very little meat. I pour the water out first and smell it, if it smells fresh then I use it. In fact, I smell the water from every coconut I use. The clear water is not always good either, so I go by smell alone not color.

ditto. young coconut + purple flesh + small amount of flesh = baby coco

Well Well - and all this time I was hesitant to use any coco tinged purple. It was actually the smell of a purple one last week that made me go online and try and find more info - because it smelled deliciously good! And many online info sources say that purple = bad. But the coco on storm/jinjee's site looked like mine and all the kids were eating them!
Thanks for the tips all! I guess I will use them for smoothies - I am just so used to them being older, and I usually use the meat for noodles or pie. :D

I use the purplish thin meat Young coconuts with no problems but I do find that the white ones taste better to me. Possibly that is because I always put both the juice and meat in the VM and blend smooth and there is more meat in the white ones.
I also use the juice taste test as a reliable indicator of a good coconut. I have eaten many young coconuts and in all those coconuts only one time did I ever have one fail the test and it had a very distinctive vinegar taste to it.
