So, hubby has a business trip Thursday to fly way up north. He's going to have several layovers and is staying in a very small town. He's leaving Thurs morn and will return Fri night. So, is there any foods that I can send with him that they'll allow on the flight? We haven't flown in about 11 years, so we're not sure what's allowed! Even just bananas and apples could hold him over, cause it's not a very long trip. But he won't have a rental car & there isn't even a large grocery store in this town! So, my concern is during layovers, and while he's up there. Any advice from those of you used to traveling while raw? I'd really appreciate it!!:D

Hi Resa,

I went on a flight recently and I packed more food in my suitcase than clothes! I took nuts, trailmix, even pates and crackers in tupperware-type containers.

I don't think they allow food through security but he can get some fruit to stash in the terminal. When I got to my destination, I found a store and got a bunch of bananas and apples and kept them in my room.

My two cents! Alicia

Hi! I am a raw flight attendant so I am pro at this subject! lol

You can take ANY food with you onto the airplane as long as it's not a liquid. ( no smoothies, or juices, or water).

The only way it gets complicated is if you are doing an international flight. in that case, customs doesn't allow certain fruits. If you're flying within the US or Canada, it's totally fine to take anything with you.

I always take fruit with me. Depending on how long the flight is, I'll make myself a BIG salad in a container and bring some kind of dressing in a mini container. I bought really good air-tight containers that have never leaked on me! I bought them at Wal-mart (I'm not a huge supporter of wal-mart, but they are the only place that sell these.

I find that I feel so much more hydrated when I just eat fruit on a flight. Also, your digestive system expands, so it's important not to eat anything that will bog it down.

Hope I helped. I have a blog on raw travel as well! Check it out in my sig.

i had some food confiscated last time i flew. i had some nut pate in a very small tupperware container in my carry on, which they took and that was all, but still a disappointment as it was my sustenance!

yeah, when i was in france last year, the ryanair security line got all backed up because there were no liquids aloud in carryons and security couldnt decide if peanut butter was a solid or a liquid....wonder what they'd think of coconut oil. hehehe

How do you feel about your food being x-rayed? if you carry it on it has to go through those huge security xray machines right? how safe is that?

I had certainly considered that. :( Can't be great, but I think it's still better than not having raw foods available during the flight and layovers. I'll ask if hubby's up for a 2 day water fast, but I doubt he'll feel like it while traveling. So, it's a risk he'll take I guess. Better than the fast food and junk foods available at the airports, right?! Those foods are just not an option at all. He's just going to take fruit and nuts in the carry on.

I doubt there's much a potential hijacker could do with a jar of peanut butter. Unless of course someone had a nut allergy.

I take fruit, nuts, avocados, and onion bread. The neat thing is that, when I used to fly on SAD, my feet and toes would be all swollen by the end of the day. When I stay raw, no swelling! It's a pretty clear sign that this is much better for my body!!

Be aware that there are temptations galore in airports and when traveling (he won't have any supervision or accountability), so pack things that are filling and yummy so he can stay raw. The onion bread with avocados helps me a lot, since it tastes so good and is really filling.

Thanks!! He took a very small carry on so all we could fit in the bag were nuts, cacao crispy crackers, bananas & a few tangerines. But, he found out there is a grocery store right by the office he's going to be working at, so he will stock up when he gets there! That's very good!! I took him to the airport this morning and we were both in tears! He'll be back tomorrow night!! But that's the longest we'll have been apart in 12 years!! LOL!:o
