I just bought an excalibur dehydrator and was so excited to use it. Having been eating raw for all of one week, I am dying for some crackers or something. I'm so surprised it's so noisy!, the fan is a pretty loud hum. Is this normal? do y'all who have dehydrators keep them in the kitchen?, or put them in the garage or something.

Ours stays in our kitchen and is on a lot. The noise doesn't bother us-actually, it's a kind of relaxing white noise. But then again, we are a big loud family in an even bigger loud house, so I could see how it would seem louder in a small house or apartment.:D

We put ours on a shelf out in the garage because we all found the noise bothersome. Could you do something like that? Also, in the summer it totally heats up my kitchen! Kind of a bonus this time of the year though ;)

It reminds me of a microwave and the noise does bother me, but we leave it in the kitchen. Mostly when it's on it's overnight anyway.

I know this is going to sound odd, but could I put my dehydrator outside on the back porch while using it? There is an outlet out there. I don;t have one yet, but I think the noise would be bothersome. I know, I feel silly asking this, being as I'm in New England and it's February. :p

Seems like the cold would mess up the temp?? Or no?

well i'm glad to know that there's not something wrong with it at least, i didn't anticipate the noise. I think i'll practice dehydrating for a week or two and then find a way to move it to the garage, I really get nervous when there is so much noise around.

Yeah, I also like the humming of the dehydrator running just as I like to sleep with a fan on...the sound (to me) is soothing. My house is almost, eerily "too quiet" when the dehydrator is not on!

I never noticed how loud mine was until I went Raw. Or is it that I am just older and need a more quiet retreat? I've had my exalibur for 20+ years, and never noticed the noise before. I think it does have to do with having a noisy, busy, family with alot going on. Just think of it as knowing something good to eat is on it's way. I always loved the sound of the pressure cooker, growing up, it usually meant a nice pot of beans. Comfort food, comfort noise.

yes noisy. i live in a studio, so i turn mine off at night! i just leave the stuff in there if it s not done and put it on n the morning....

speaking of dehydrators - mine is in a sort of shelf, so i cant see the dial, so here is my question, if the excalibur dehydrator dial is like a clock, what time are the different degrees at?

My dehydrator doesn't bother me but it annoys my mum!

I have one very noise sensitive person in my household and I don't have my dehydrator yet but I have a spot all planned out for it on the counter in my pantry/laundry room where I can shut the door :) .

Fun reading everyone's responses :)

The sound doesn't bother us on this end. I actually find it soothing, as a few have already mentioned. I've even forgotten to turn it off sometimes after giving washed trays and sheets a quick dry.
