Hi all,

I tried sprouting for the 1st time and have a question:

I followed the steps in Alissa's book to sprout millet, but it appears only half the grains sprouted. I tasted a tiny spoonful, and it was hard as rock. Is this batch salvageable?

Thanks.

I don't know what her instructions are but the first one should be ~ purchase and use VERY fresh millet. Second: don't drown your millet. It doesn't take long to soak and/or sprout. Should have great sprouts w/in 24 hours.

Thanks for the input.

I followed the instructions correctly, so maybe the millet wasn't fresh. I guess I'll have to chuck this batch. :(

What are the directions? Maybe those were incorrect.

I'm not sure whether you really can sprout millet. I ready somewhere that you have to buy a special type which still has a little transparent husk on it. I don't know what the millet you have bought looks like, but if it lacks this outer casing, then probably it won't sprout. I've never managed to make it do so.

Alissa's book says to soak millet for 5 hrs, but I I let mine soak overnight for 6 or 7 hrs. Then I rinsed and drained 3x the next day, covering the bowl with paper towel after each rinse/drain. Later that night I noticed teeny tiny tails on just some of the millet grains, so I rinsed and drained 1 more time and covered with paper towel overnight. The next day I saw no change.

I think mine were hulled millet. They're so tiny that it's hard to tell if it's got the outer casing or not. They're just bright yellow. I got it at a bulk foods place, so I don't have a package label to look at.

O.k., this is a potential... When it says "5 hours", I'd suggest no longer because you can drown the seeds/nuts if they go longer BUT...

..... I noticed teeny tiny tails on just some of the millet grains,

... which means there was still life in some of them. I'm thinking ~ old... since tails on only some of them. Sometimes the turn-over in a store is not fast enough and the stuff is not fresh enough.

That makes sense. Thanks, Revvell. I appreciate your feedback!
