I keep hearing that it is important to not to overconsume nuts when eating raw foods. Alot of online sources recommended 5 servings or nuts a week but I eat AT LEAST 5 servings of nuts/seeds/nut butters per day since it is the only snack I know of that keeps my hunger under control. I am trying to find out why it is important not to eat alot of nuts and the only thing I find is that the fat might cause weight gain. I am not having any trouble with my weight so is it ok to eat so much nuts and have most of my calories coming from fats?

I say listen to your body and just use good common sense. I love nuts and went I emarked upon my raw journey (Aug 06) I just ate them by the handfuls whenever I wanted. Now I love brazils and so I don't buy them in large quantity because I can easily sit around and be a pig and just munch on them without being hungry. I know that we are all different and our bodies respond differently. I know that when I first went rawvegan, I ate a high amount of fat and nuts and didn't worry about it and I lost about 40 that first month and a half (gotta look at my blog, can't remember if that number is correct)...

I tend to lose weight consistently and in higher weekly numbers when my fat and nut intake is higher...but that's just me. I know that there are some friends here that don't eat much nuts or fats. I say listen to your body. What I absolutely love about this journey is that I don't measure or count anything; I just eat it and enjoy it. I had to check myself and use common sense and not eat 2 lbs of grapes just because they are yummy - my budget keeps me from going crazy.

So again, I say, listen to your body, how it is responding (weight, the way you feel in general) and try to keep a healthy balance. I have some friends who might eat 20 or 30 bananas per day for a week or two at a time. I personally aim for a balance that allows for all of natures goodness in some form or fashion and point in time rather than just limiting myself to just one raw goodie.

does your body ever give you a sign to switch fats or nuts? i'm just asking out of curiosity. there are times when I seriously crave a certain nut/seed and will just eat a greater majority of that compared to the others that i eat and after a while, i lose interest in it and will crave something else. my body has really been wanting cashews and so i bought some yesterday and i will just add a handful or two of them in here and there with my meals (eat every three hours).....

Take care...

It may be a good idea to replace some of the nuts with seeds. They are just as satisfying and sunflower and pumpkin make a good snack.

If nuts make you feel good, then don't worry. Your body will most likely naturally let go of so many nuts when ready. Are you eating plenty of other plant foods as well? This probably goes without saying, but make sure you have plenty of fruits and vegies in your diet. If the nuts don't make you feel your best, then maybe you can substitute some other fatty foods that are lighter like hemp seeds, avocado, flax seeds, or raw olives to feel satisfied. I agree with sport about eating some seeds in place of nuts.I use lots of soaked sunflower seeds. I also find that soaked almonds make me feel much better than unsoaked ones, and I don't eat as many of them.
Best Wishes!

Thanks everyone. I think I will definitely start eating more seeds instead then since those are so tastyyyyy too. I just wish they didnt always roast them! I want to eat hemp seeds too but I can't find them in the grocery store! Then again, my grocery store doesn't even sell kale very often. =(

It's not so much that I crave switching nuts or anything, I mainly crave bread and pitas and then I go and binge on nuts instead..
If there's one thing I miss it's my pumpernickel bread and spinach dip!!
