Right... I have a confession to make,
Despite eating raw since September I have NEVER made the famous onion bread.
I can't find sweet onions here in the UK. Only yellow and red ones. Do you think there is another way I could make it? Maybe replace some of the onions with apple or something? Or use some buckwheat? I'm assuming if I made it with regular onions it would be way too strong.

I wouldn't know a sweet onion from any other. I use what I have. Seems to work fine for me.

subbacultcha,
I think the reason it calls for sweet onion is because they are more watery. I have made it with all kinds of onions and it turns out fine, except with some onions that I use the bread is somewhat drier, depending on the wetness of the onions.
Actually, I just made "Better than Onion Bread," that someone on the board recommended, and I like it even better. I think the original onion bread recipe for Onion Bread calls for 3 1/2 lbs. of onions. One time I bought that amount, and then measured the chopped onions. It was 6 cups. So when I made the "Better than Onion Bread," I used 6 cups of the various vegetables called for. My DH loved it too! Here is the link, in case you are interested:

Good Luck!

This bread is a staple in our home. IMO regular onions too strong if you use the whole amount it says. Many times I couldn't find sweet onions, so I reduced the amount of regular onions and used shredded carrots and zuchini for the rest. Yum! This is a very versital recipe. You could add all different kinds of veggies and it would still turn out great as long as there is enough moisture to hold it together.

I am with you on this. I have onion bread in the dehydrator right now but I do not know what a sweet onion is. I just use the regular ones.

Maybe the "regular" ones are sweet? LOL

Aren't yellow onions the sweet onions? That's what I've always understood..

I saw some sweet onions in Waitrose the other day. I use ordinary onions and/or shallots when I make onion bread.

I think "vidalia" onions are sweet, and they are yellow, but I don't think all yellow onions are "sweet onions"....
HOWEVER, I always use regular yellow ones and it turns out great!

You can buy Spanish or white onions which are milder than the usual red or brown onions. They have a milder taste which is good in salads.
I've never been to the big wholefoods stores in London but I have seen these onions in Sainsburys, Tescos, etc.
I'm about to sign up for an organic fruit and veg box delivery so hope they will have them too (Abel & Cole).
I haven't tried the onion bread yet purely because I know that my husband will complain about the smell throughout the house!!!
