Hi everyone,

I really enjoy drinking sparkling water on its own or mixed with fresh juice. It was a huge help to me when I gave up soft drinks.

I am aware that soft drinks deplete the bones of calcium, because of the phosphoric acid they contain.

Does anyone know if sparkling water contains phosphoric acid or reduces bone density? Are there any adverse effects of drinking it? Are certain kinds "better" than others?

I'm a newbie, so sorry if this is a stupid question!

Thanks for your input!

Christina

Sorry but I never hear anyone on this forum talking about sparkling water....only the good, pure, real stuff. I can promise you one thing, the more you drink pure water the more you will crave it. You'll even love it without all the ice. Yep, it's straight water at out house. When you get used to plain water and then you have a swallow of soda you'll wonder why people drink anything with carbonation as it burns your throat going down. I love pure, clean water and you will too!!! Good Luck....Judith:)

Thank you Judith :) Don't get me wrong, I do love plain, pure water and drink lots of it! I just still get "fizzy" cravings now and then, but maybe, like you said, they will pass. I am still curious about adverse health effects if anyone knows...

Thanks again!

I would avoid seltzer water because it contains quinine. Quinine, in much higher doses, is a drug that is sometimes used to treat severe leg cramps.
From an online health reference website:
"Quinine side effects include ringing in the ears, decreased hearing, vertigo, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, flushing or itching of the skin, headache, and fever."

Natural sparkling water, that comes from springs in the earth with the carbonation already in it, such as perrier, should be fine. Drinking natural sparkling water really helped me relieve some of the bloating I experienced when first going raw.

I looked up sparking water to learn more about it:

After reading about it I am going to stick with plain ol pure water.

I lifted the following passage from the wiki site listed above. It just shows how far the times they are. They are still touting milk as the saviour of bones.

Health effects
Sparkling mineral waters show slightly greater tooth enamel dissolution potential than still waters, but levels remain low and are of the order of one hundred times less than soft drinks. De-gassing of a sparkling mineral water reduces its dissolution, but the total levels are still relatively low, suggesting that carbonation of drinks may not be an important factor per se in respect of erosive potential. [4]

Intake of carbonated beverages has been associated with increased bone fracture risk in observational studies, but the net effect of carbonated beverage constituents on calcium economy of the body is negligible. Thus, the skeletal effects of carbonated beverage consumption are likely due primarily to milk displacement (drinking club soda and thus drinking less milk). [4]

Oh dear. Now I wonder what all is in my body! I grew up taking Quinine (grew up in Africa and we used it to combat malaria.)
