I was going to use some sunflower oil or something like that. Any flavorless oil would work. You could buy the nut oil and then use that too, since the oil is going to seperate out. Like buy some almond oil, then make the almond butter.
My friend gave me the ratio of 24 oz of nuts to 1/4 cup of oil. I haven't made a nut butter yet. Is this what you are using?

I don't use any oils at all when I make nut butters or tahini, if you leave it processing (in a food processor) for long enough (with cool down periods otherwise it WILL cook, happened on my first try), it will blend into a smooth nut butter, it just takes quite a while, especially with almonds, but with time and patience, you can get a smooth nut butter without adding oil.

Am I supposed to soak and dehydrate the almonds? Thanks!

I use sunflower oil for nut butters and sesame oil for tahini.

Thank you! Now, I use safflower oil, but for a true raw recipe, I think I would have to use Flax or Hemp....but aren't they too strong in flavor? With the other oils suggested....sesame, almond....does that mean the nut butter wouldn't be really raw? Sorry to be so picky...just gearing up and preparing for the 30 day challenge!!!:p

Well the sunflower and sesame oils I use are organic, cold-pressed etc. so I consider them to be raw...Even if they're not it doesn't bother me too much as that's the best I'm going to get.

oh! I didn't realize that other oils were cold pressed besides olive oil! That makes sense! I'd rather use a lighter oil than flax or hemp for the nut butters...but maybe I should try is sometime with one of them!:p

Cold pressed doesn't mean raw though, cold pressed normally means around 250 degrees (I think I read this is one of my recipe books), don't know who decided to call that "cold"...
In any case in small amounts I don't mind.

napa valley naturals (think thats the brand...)
makes a sesame oil that says right on it it is processed at below 98 degrees. rapunzel (i think thats the brand) makes a sunflower oil that says it is processed at a low (raw) temperature. i forget what temp but its like 102 or something. i think rapunzel also makes a low temp processed sesame. i forget the temp but it says it on the bottle.
