We've started giving our 8 month old little tastes here and there of juice, pureed foods, etc. We have also given him some coconut water from the thai cocos which are not organic and are sprayed upon entry to the US with fungicide. My partner and I eat them anyway.

But the baby gets hives around his mouth and face with the coconut water from these cocos. Of course, I stopped giving it to him. I eat a raw diet and am breastfeeding, so I doubt its some kind of reaction due to other foods in his diet. For instance, I used to get a similar reaction to avocados and other fruits when I was not a vegan.

Has anyone had this reaction with fresh young coconuts? I wonder if it is a reaction b/c these are the lowest grade coconuts, sprayed, etc. I want to try some fresh cocos, but don't want to see him suffer. Maybe I should wait until he is much older?

Thanks!

I am going to try an experiment on the next young coconut I open. I am going to cut away the top layer of white stuff in the area I am going to open and hopefully remove the fungicide that way. Is anyone now doing anything to remove the fungicide from the young coconut ?

The FDA now considers coconuts tree nuts (an allergen), so your baby might have a tree nut allergy (or sensitivity). You might just want to wait a few more months before reintroducing and see what happens. Most kids outgrow these allergies by 5 years old I'm told, so if that's what it might be, there's still hope for your little one to drink it.

Just a thought......could be wrong...........

Thanks afavro, I didn't realize that. I've read that coconuts are perfect for babies, and I thought it must be something in my diet that is preventing him from getting the benefit of the magic coco. But, the more I think about it, the more I think that maybe it is a perfect food for mother -- to then transform into mama's milk.

I would be interested to know if anyone has had success with the fresh, real thing, though.
