I know this topic has been beaten to death, but I was wondering if anyone has detoxed doing raw while also detoxing from medication? I went off of my birth control pills about a month and a half ago, and I have been raw (as close to 100% as possible) for the last 2 1/2 weeks.

Everything was going great, I'd lost almost 10 lbs, and yesterday I woke up to see acne all over my face. I usually have very good skin, so this is really annoying for me. I haven't been broken out this bad since I went off of the depo provera bc shot (which majorly messed me up and had caused me to gain almost 30 lbs). I've even broken out on my chest, and it looks terrible. I also feel bloated and seem to have gained a few lbs back.

I read Alissa's post re: detox, and luckily so far I haven;t had any flu-like symptoms, but I wonder if going off of the bc pill in addition to going raw in such a short period of time is compounding my detox symptoms?

it will go away, just give it time. i did the same thing as you, off birth control for a little bit and then went raw and had most of the same problems you are having. i dabbled in raw the year prior, but got set back. this time i'm doing 100% better. i have been oil pulling with coconut oil for about a month now and also added msm to my green smoothies and this has helped my skin tremendously. and this is coming from someone who has had a "pizza face" since i was 10-11 years old. the scars are even starting to disappear. my weight also fluctuated a bit for the first few months of coming off of bc pills. i've been stuck now at the weight i am currently at for about a month, but i know my body is healing from the inside outward. i know to give my body the time that it needs to do "it's thing" and the weight will come off and to just be patient. i don't remeber where i read it, (probably here) but that sometimes weight loss will stop for a while or even go up until your body is ready to release old toxins (detox) and then the weight loss begins again. so i'm sure my body is going to be geting ready for a realease soon. hope this helps, and don't despair, you will get through it one step at a time.

Yeah, I'm still in the detox phase..even though I've been pretty much raw for 1.5 months (I still eat cooked vegan occasionally, but I'm trying to stop). But the acne was horrible after going raw. I strongly recommend MSM. It works almost instantaneously.

Going off the b/c pills alone would most likely cause acne, but with going raw also I am sure the combination of the two is why it is happening. I have never had acne in my life, yet when I went from 80% raw to 100% raw I had what looked like acne cysts all over my jaw line. The good news was that it did go away and now my skin glows (not my words...Ü...). So hang in there! Everything always gets better in the end when raw. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the great answers! I feel better knowing this isn't too abnormal...

What is MSM? (sorry, I'm new to this :o ) I definitely want to get some!

I'm trying to stay the course, it is just so hard when intellectually you know that the negative stuff that is happening is positive, but emotionally/physically you feel poorly...

MSM serves as an important source of bioavailable dietary sulfur, a mineral that plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity and elasticity of connective and other tissues. It is an important component of proteins found throughout the body, such as in hair, nails, skin and tendons.

MSM is a naturally occurring form of organic sulfur found mainly in protein-rich foods such as eggs, fish and lean meat. Taking MSM each day helps to replenish the body's supply of sulfur.
Suitable for vegetarians and hypoallergenic.

*That is from source naturals msm powder, which is the one that I have been using. I don't see this being sold here on Alissa's site, so I hope I'm allowed to say that I got mine from vitacost.com. They are very reputable and I have bought several things from them, fast shipping and great prices.*

Just one more note, cause i know it said in that post that it is found primarily in protein rich foods such as eggs, fish and lean meat, but it says on the label that it does NOT contain yeast, dairy, egg, gluten, salt, preservatives, artificial color, flavor or fragrance. so i just wanted to clarify that. sorry if there was any confusion.:o

Thanks :) that makes sense to me- no confusion. I googled MSM and thanks for the tip on where to buy it. How long have you been raw for? Did it take awhile for everything to stabilize for you?

i dabbled in it for about a year, but kept falling off. then i got my vitamix and haven't really looked back since. i fell off the wagon for about 2 weeks when i went down to florida for christmas, but this whole month has been 100% (if you don't count spices  ). i wasn''t able to bring my vitamix down with me because i flew, and there was just no way in hell i would trust the airline to NOT lose it or break it. when i drove down to florida about 2 months prior (funeral i had to attend) i packed it and had no problem staying 100% while down that time. so off and on for about 1 and 1/2 years, but fully committed for about 4 months (except for my slip up) and now 100% since the beginning of this month. as far as stabalizing, what do mean more specifically? i have thyroid issues that are still healing, but have lowered my dosage, i feel a million times better, my mood is more stable and happier, my face is cleraing great, etc. it's been a work in progress, but i started to notice results like these about 2 weeks to a month into it. just keep up the good work and you'll get to where you need to be, it just takes time. and continue to come here as i do have to say that this site has definitely been a MAJOR help in staying the course. if i feel the sickness (what i like to call it :D ) to eat something cooked i try to come here and just read a few posts on success stories. definitely motivating to keep pushing through. good luck

Great to hear your story lanetta's mouse! I need to get a vitamix- it sounds like a great device! :)

I'm *still* going through detox! ugh... My skin still looks bad (almost worse), I'm tired, my throat is a bit sore, and my ears feel clogged. My back kind of hurts too. and now I'm bloated.

Plus, I feel so terrible from my lunch today. I went to Red Robin and ordered the oriental salad, told them to hold the chicken and put the dressing on the side. Instead they brought me an apple/candied walnut salad without chicken, with dressing all over it. It was a business lunch, we were all in a hurry to get back to another meeting, so I didn't want to send it back and I just ate it. But now I ate bad non-raw dressing and walnuts which were candied... do I have to go back to day one on my raw count now?

no, you just went over a speed bump or you hit a pot hole in the road, but you keep going. things happen in life and stressing over it could cause more damage than just moving on and know that you did the best that you could in that situation. keep thinking positive and know that you are doing the best thing you can do for your body:D .

Going off bc pills makes a lot of people break out. I went off mine 1 yr ago exactly. The first month or so I was ok, but then my skin broke out something awful! It was horrible for about 4-5 months. I still get some pimples now - more than when on the pills, but it is much improved. I found getting facials really helped immensely to clear things up. Hugs - I know how it feels. But I really feel like you just have to be patient until your body sorts itself out. Oh and I also had a bit of success from washing my face with honey.

Thank you lanettasmouse! :) This helps me... its hard because i tend to be a perfectionist (which is probably why I've been able to go cold turkey to raw), but then when I miss up (even if it is out of my control) I feel awful. I appreciate your words because they remind me that I (and others here) are doing the "best I can do" in a situation and for my body. It helps me be kinder to myself. :o

Hi Cindy- thank you so much for the advice! I went off almost a month ago, and the skin stuff just now started. But, then again I've been on this stuff for awhile, so it makes sense it should take awhile to detox from it too. I'll try the honey tip too! :) But I may eat it before I get it on my face. teehee
